Marlins Name Dillon Lawson Hitting Coach

The Miami Marlins announced Dillon Lawson as their new hitting coach on Monday. Lawson, 41, moves into the full-time role after joining the organization on July 1 as a roving hitting coach, and he replaces Pedro Guerrero, who held the job for the previous two seasons.

The move is official, confirmed directly by the club in its announcement. Lawson will report to Marlins director of hitting Joe Migliaccio and work alongside Major League assistant hitting coaches Chris Hess and Corbin Day as part of Miami’s hitting department.

The Terms Of The Hire

Miami’s announcement did not include contract length or salary figures. What is confirmed is the title and reporting structure: Lawson takes over as the Marlins’ Major League hitting coach, working under Migliaccio and alongside Hess and Day on the big league staff.

Why The Marlins Made The Move

Lawson and Migliaccio have a prior working relationship. Migliaccio hired Lawson as a hitting coach during their shared time with the New York Yankees organization, a connection that factored into brining him to Miami.

Migliaccio detailed his thinking in the team’s statement. “We’re excited to welcome Dillon to the Miami Marlins,” Migliaccio wrote to MLB.com. “He’s an excellent fit for our organization and our vision for player development.

He combines a strong understanding of hitting with an innovative, collaborative approach and a commitment to continually evolving how we develop players. Dillon understands the importance of connecting information, individualized development, and on-field performance, while helping create an environment where our staff works together toward a common goal. We’re excited about the impact he’ll have on our hitters and our department as a whole!”

Miami’s offense has shown mixed results in recent production. The club’s young position players ranked tied for fifth in the majors in on-base percentage at .326, but the team ranked tied for 11th in FanGraphs’ offensive value and tied for 16th in slugging percentage at .400. Those numbers frame the development job now in front of Lawson and the rest of the hitting staff, though neither the team nor Lawson has outlined specific plans for closing the gap in power production.

Lawson’s Background

Lawson spent the 2025 and 2026 seasons as the Boston Red Sox’s Major League assistant hitting coach after serving as their Minor League hitting coordinator in 2024. Before that stop, he spent five seasons in the Yankees organization, working as Major League hitting coach in 2022 and 2023 and as Minor League hitting coordinator from 2019 through 2021.

His coaching career in professional baseball began in the Houston Astros system, where he worked as a Minor League hitting coach with Short-Season Single-A Tri-City in 2016 and with Single-A Quad Cities in 2018. The Marlins hiring gives him his first full-time Major League hitting coach title with a third organization.

What’s Next

Lawson now shifts from his roving instructor duties, which began July 1, into a season-round role overseeing Miami’s Major League hitting program with Hess and Day. The Marlins have not announced further staff moves beyond this appointment.
