Jorge Posada Feels Unwelcome in Yankees Locker Room

Things get stranger for the Yankees, diary of a Yankees fan. The poisoness of the Yankee clubhouse was on unfortunate display in the last few days. Jorge Posada, the beloved catcher of the last Yankees dynasty, said, “I don’t feel welcome when I go there, you know? Even in spring training, I don’t feel like, I’m just like, I don’t know, I don’t feel welcome. I don’t feel like they want me there, so I don’t go.”

That was his response when he was asked if he was open to taking another position with the team. Posada was rumored to be the next manager of the team, and could have taken a coaching position with the team next season to make the transition to the head job. It is said he loves baseball and cannot keep away.

Posada, a five-time silver slugger, played for the team from 1995 until 2011. In 2007, he shifted from being behind the plate for the team to designated hitter. The team signed Brian McCann; he was a Gold Glove winner. In all, Posada got 1,664 hits, 275 home runs, and posted a career .273/.374/.474 slash line. He started 1,450 regular-season games behind the plate for the Yankees.

Thirty Years Since the Andy Pettitte 1-0 Gem in the World Series

On Oct. 24, 1996, a little more than thirty years ago, Andy Pettitte was a rookie who hurled a gem, winning 1-0, in game five of the World Series. That followed up his Game One disaster, in which the Yankees lost 12-1. He gave up seven runs in just two and one-third innings. He was much better in Game Five, hurling 8+ scoreless innings, and outdueling John Smoltz in the 1-0 win that put the Yankees up in the series 3-2. They went on to win, of course. They won in 1998, 1999, and 2000.

Pettitte is now 54 years old. Diary of a Yankees fan. Says for Game Five, “This time, I was just more prepared,” Pettitte said. “All I was asking for was another chance. This can’t be how my season ends after the year that I had. All that drove me to be ultra-motivated and ready to pitch this game and not allow it to get away from me emotionally again.”

Conclusion: A Long Time and a Head Scratcher

It has now been about thirty years since the Yankees’ last dynasty. It has been thirty years since Andy Pettitte pitched his 1-0 World Series Game Five gem in Atlanta’s Fulton County Stadium. Ted Turner was there. We are a long way from that, diary of a Yankees fan. In the meantime, Pettite’s teammate, Jorge Posada, says he feels unwelcome in the Yankees’ dysfunctional locker room.
