The Detroit Lions and Safety Kerby Joseph agreed to a historic contract extension Wednesday evening. His contract is for 4 years and $86 million. The $21.5 million yearly salary is the most for a safety in NFL history.
Joseph is cashing in off the best year of his NFL career. He led the league in 2024 with 9 interceptions. It led to a First-Team All-Pro selection. According to PFF, he was the No.1 ranked safety overall and the top safety in coverage in 2024. Will Joseph continue anchoring the Detroit Lions defense for years to come?
Detroit Lions Offseason Summary
The Lions had the best regular season in franchise history but disappointed in the NFL Playoffs. They lost to the Washington Commanders in the NFC Divisional Round. A huge issue for the Detroit Lions in the second half of the year was its defense. The unit was ravaged by injuries. It impacted them on the field.
Joseph will return to a Lions defense brimming with talent. Defensive End Aidan Hutchinson, Linebacker Derrick Barnes, and Safety Brian Branch will look to remain healthy for a full season and help the team take the next step. With an offense that should be one of the league’s best in 2025, the defense is the part of the team with question marks.
Final Thoughts
Joseph is a great signing for the Detroit Lions. The team rewarded one of its cornerstone players with a historic contract extension. He will look to continue playing well and reinforce the faith the team showed in him with his new contract.
