Desmond Ridder Joins Bengals, Adds Depth Behind Joe Burrow

The Cincinnati Bengals made a quiet but important addition this weekend. Former University of Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder has signed to back up Joe Burrow.
Ridder brings experience, mobility and starting reps to a crowded quarterback room. With training camp looming, his arrival adds more intrigue to the backup battle.

Bengals Sign Familiar Face at Quarterback

Desmond Ridder’s signing marks a homecoming for the former Bearcats star quarterback. He led Cincinnati to the College Football Playoff in his final collegiate season. He was originally drafted by Atlanta and has since bounced around the league.
Ridder has made 18 starts and thrown for over 4,000 yards in three seasons. The Bengals are hoping Ridder provides some needed depth and insurance. He’ll compete directly with Jake Browning for the backup quarterback role behind Burrow.

What Desmond Ridder Brings to the Roster

Desmond Ridder’s career stats aren’t eye-popping, but they reflect solid experience. He has 16 touchdown passes, 14 interceptions and five rushing scores in 25 games. Last season, Ridder saw action with the Las Vegas Raiders after injuries hit hard.
He finished with 458 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions overall. He was recruited to Cincinnati in 2016 by Zac Taylor, now the Bengals coach. That past connection could prove valuable as camp competition heats up this week.

Roster Moves and Depth Chart Shake-Up

To make room for Desmond Ridder, the Bengals released veteran Logan Woodside. The quarterback room now features Burrow, Browning, Ridder and rookie Payton Thorne. Jake Browning served as Burrow’s primary backup last season and started seven games.
However, Ridder’s arrival signals that the job is no longer locked in. Cincinnati also added depth on the defensive line with three new signings. McTelvin Agim, Taven Bryan and Andrew Raym were all brought in on Sunday.
