Derwin James Lands at No. 50 on NFL Top 100 as Chargers Star Continues Elite Run
Few defensive players in the NFL can do what Derwin James does. The Los Angeles Chargers star checked in at No. 50 on the 2026 NFL Top 100 list, marking his sixth appearance on the annual rankings and further cementing his reputation as one of football’s most versatile defenders.
While he’s officially listed as a safety, James has evolved into something much more valuable: a positionless defensive weapon capable of impacting every level of the field.
Derwin James Is Still One of the NFL’s Most Unique Defenders
What separates Derwin James from most defensive backs is his ability to line up virtually anywhere.
According to NFL Pro Insight, James was one of only five defenders in 2025 to play at least 100 snaps on the defensive line, at linebacker, and at safety. That versatility gives the Los Angeles Chargers defensive coaches the freedom to use him in ways few teams can replicate.

James posted a 12.9% blitz rate, creating 16 quarterback pressures. Among defensive backs with at least 25 pass-rush attempts, that ranked second in the NFL.
Opposing offenses clearly respected his ability to disrupt plays in the backfield. He was chipped by blockers on nearly 12% of his pass-rush opportunities, another figure that ranked near the top among defensive backs.
Those numbers highlight just how uncomfortable he makes life for offenses trying to identify where pressure is coming from.
Pro Bowl Recognition Continues
James’ performance earned him another trip to the Pro Bowl, his second consecutive selection and fifth overall.
For a player who has battled injuries at times throughout his career, the sustained success is especially impressive.
Even as he approaches his age-30 season, James remains one of the foundational pieces of the Chargers defense and continues to play at an elite level.
His production wasn’t limited to creating pressure, either. James tied his career high with three interceptions, matching the total he recorded during his standout rookie campaign back in 2018.
Chargers Rewarded Him Accordingly
Before the season, the Chargers made a major commitment to their defensive leader. James signed a three-year, $75.6 million extension that made him the highest-paid safety in the NFL on an annual basis.
The deal reflected not only his production but also his importance to the entire defense.
Players with James’ versatility are incredibly difficult to find. His ability to impact the game as a coverage defender, run stopper, and pass rusher makes him one of the league’s most complete defensive players.
Is No. 50 Too Low?
Given his résumé, there’s an argument that James could have ranked even higher.
He’s a five-time Pro Bowler, one of the most versatile defenders in football, and remains the centerpiece of a Chargers defense that heavily relies on his unique skill set.
Still, landing at No. 50 keeps him firmly among the NFL’s elite players.
As he enters another season in Los Angeles, James continues to prove that traditional position labels don’t fully apply to him. He’s more than a safety.
He’s one of the NFL’s ultimate chess pieces, and that’s exactly why he’s once again earned a spot among the league’s top 100 players.
