Dak Prescott confronted a stadium worker who called out “Embarrassing” as the Cowboys quarterback walked to the locker room following Dallas’ 24-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday night. Prescott did not dispute the word itself, but he objected to how it was delivered.
Video of the hallway exchange showed Prescott calling the man a “tough guy” and asking for him to be removed, telling someone nearby to “Get his (expletive) out of here.” The moment came moments after a loss that dropped Dallas to 2-3 and handed Tampa Bay its first win of the season.
Dak Prescott Stadium Worker Heckler: What Happened?
According to Prescott, the worker called out “Embarrassing” as he passed, then looked away when Prescott turned toward him. When Prescott looked back again, the man said something else, which Prescott did not repeat publicly.
Prescott addressed the incident directly in his postgame press conference. “When he said it, I just happened to look at him, and at that point, he looked away. And when I turned my head back, he said something else,” Prescott said.
“And so that’s the part that, just as a man or as just a person, feel free to speak your mind, just speak it. Don’t cower away from the reaction that you’re going to get. If you’re saying it’s embarrassing, say it’s embarrassing.
If you’re saying it to me, then say it to me. Don’t go back on it.”
What It Means
Prescott made clear his issue was with the manner of the comment, not its substance. He said the worker was not wrong to call the loss embarrassing, and added that he hated the whole episode was now a topic of conversation.
Prescott himself stopped short of using that word to describe the game, drawing a distinction between Dallas’ performance and the quality of Tampa Bay’s gameplan. “To use the word embarrassing is tough. I feel like I’m discrediting the NFL if I use that and particularly the Tampa Bay Bucs and a great Todd Bowles, defensive coached team,” Prescott said.
“The plan and what (the Bucs) did tonight is the reason for (this loss). To say embarrassing I think I’d be discrediting them, but we were definitely supposed to win this game.”
Context: A Loss That Stood Out
The Cowboys scored 16 points, their lowest output since Week 3 of last season, and managed just 50 rushing yards, their worst mark since Week 16 of 2024. Dallas also allowed 241 rushing yards, with Buccaneers running back Bucky Irving gaining 165 of them, including a 72-yard run. Undrafted quarterback Jalon Daniels threw for 189 yards in just his second NFL start.
Dallas also failed on a two-point conversion attempt late in the fourth quarter while trailing by eight. The defeat marked just the sixth time in franchise history the Cowboys lost to a team that entered the game at 0-4 or worse, and only the second time that happened at home. The last such home loss came in 1975 against the Green Bay Packers, when Dallas was also 0-4.
Prescott echoed head coach Brian Schottenheimer’s message to the locker room afterward. “I think he said it best in the locker room: In this league, you’ve got to win the games you’re supposed to win,” Prescott said. “And when a winless team comes into your home stadium in a Thursday night primetime game, yeah, we’re supposed to win that.” Schottenheimer, for his part, said the heckler’s comment was motivating, according to USA Today.
What’s Next
The Cowboys will look to respond as they continue their 2026 schedule, with the staff already facing scrutiny after the loss, as detailed in a report on possible staff changes under Schottenheimer. Dallas’ run defense, which surrendered 241 yards on the ground against Tampa Bay, will be a focal point heading into the team’s next matchup, a concern tied to broader questions about the Cowboys’ defense. Dallas is also preparing for an upcoming road test, previewed in a look at key questions facing the Cowboys against the Texans.
