The Chicago Blackhawks beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3 at United Center on Tuesday in Connor Bedard’s season debut, with Teuvo Teravainen scoring twice and Roman Kantserov adding two more as Chicago snapped a two-game losing streak.
Teravainen’s second goal, a shot from along the boards that went in off Pittsburgh goaltender Sergei Murashov at 15:42 of the third period, stood as the eventual winner. Tyler Bertuzzi added an empty-net goal with 10 seconds left to seal it. Sidney Crosby scored twice for the Penguins, who fell to 3-3-1.
Key Moments: How Chicago Pulled Away
Chicago wasted little time building momentum. Teravainen opened the scoring just 28 seconds into the first period, converting a pass from Anton Frondell. Crosby answered at 6:57, finishing a wrist shot from the right circle off a feed from Erik Karlsson to tie it 1-1.
Kantserov put the Blackhawks back in front with a power-play one-timer off a Bedard pass at 17:50 of the first, making it 2-1. He struck again early in the second period, scoring off an Artyom Levshunov assist at 10:32 to push the lead to 3-1. Nick Robertson cut the gap to 3-2 late in the second, poking in a rebound after Spencer Knight could not control a Blake Lizotte shot.
Crosby tied the game again at 3-3 in the third period, converting a Connor Dewar rebound at 9:17. Teravainen’s go-ahead goal came six minutes later, and Bertuzzi’s empty-netter closed out the 5-3 final.
Top Performers
Teravainen finished with two goals and an assist for three points. Kantserov scored twice, and Bedard, playing in his first game of the season, recorded an assist in 21:06 of ice time. Knight made 24 saves on 27 shots for Chicago.
Patrick Kane picked up his 894th career assist, tying Phil Housley for the most among American-born players in NHL history.
For Pittsburgh, Crosby’s two goals matched his output for a Penguins team led in assists by Karlsson, who had two. Murashov stopped 15 of 27 shots in net.
What It Means
Bedard missed Chicago’s first six games recovering from shoulder surgery stemming from a training injury sustained July 2. He had been expected to be out until November but returned after skating in a noncontact jersey beginning Oct. 5. His return coincided with Chicago’s first win in three tries, pushing the Blackhawks to 2-5-0 in the Central Division. Pittsburgh dropped to 3-3-1 in the Metropolitan Division with the loss.
What’s Next
Chicago leads the season series 1-0 after the win.
