The Washington Commanders walked away with a dominant 41-24 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, but the final score only tells part of the story. Both teams gave us a glimpse into their futures, for better or worse. Let’s break down the biggest takeaways from a wild game at Northwest Stadium.

Marcus Mariota Proves He’s Still Got It

When news broke that Jayden Daniels was out with a knee sprain, a collective groan could be heard from Commanders fans. However, Marcus Mariota stepped up and put on a show. He was efficient, dynamic, and looked every bit the veteran leader Washington needed. He finished with 207 yards through the air and another 40 on the ground, tacking on a touchdown with both his arm and his legs. Mariota’s poise under pressure silenced the doubters and proved he can still sling it. It was a vintage performance that should give the coaching staff a ton of confidence in their backup quarterback.

Washington’s Rushing Attack is a Force

The Commanders absolutely gashed the Raiders on the ground, racking up an incredible 201 rushing yards. It was a relentless, punishing attack that Las Vegas simply had no answer for. Jeremy McNichols was the star of the show, breaking free for a spectacular 60-yard touchdown run, the longest of his career. The offensive line created massive holes all day, and the running backs hit them with authority. This wasn’t just a good performance; it was a statement. Washington established a physical dominance that wore down the Raiders’ defense and controlled the tempo of the entire game.

The Raiders Found a Star in Tre Tucker

Despite the lopsided score, the Raiders have a genuine star on their hands in Tre Tucker. The rookie receiver was simply uncoverable, hauling in eight catches for a massive 145 yards and three touchdowns. He was Geno Smith’s go to target, and for good reason. Tucker displayed elite speed, precise route running, and the kind of big play ability that can change a game in an instant. While the rest of the offense struggled to find consistency, Tucker was a constant threat. His breakout performance is a huge silver lining for a Raiders team searching for offensive firepower.

Special Teams Woes Sink Las Vegas

You can’t win in the NFL if you lose the special teams battle, and the Raiders learned that the hard way. Washington’s special teams units were electric, while Las Vegas’s were a liability. The game truly turned on two explosive returns from the Commanders. First, Deebo Samuel ripped off a 69-yard kickoff return that set up a score. Then, Jaylin Lane took a punt 90 yards to the house for a backbreaking touchdown. Those two plays completely swung the momentum and field position. For the Raiders, a missed opportunity on fourth and one and an inability to contain Washington’s returners proved to be their undoing. It was a brutal lesson in how critical all three phases of the game are.
