Jayden Daniels on Commanders’ OT Clock Management Error

Jayden Daniels addressed the Commanders' OT clock management error that led to a 27-27 tie with the Giants, saying the breakdown "is on me."

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels took responsibility Sunday for a Commanders OT clock management failure that cost the team a chance at a game-winning field goal in a 27-27 tie with the New York Giants. Daniels was tackled for no gain with eight seconds left in overtime and no timeouts remaining, ending the game before Washington could attempt the kick.

“We have to stop the clock. We have to know the situation. We have to relay that as an offense.

It starts with everyone, top down. It’s on me,” Daniels said after the game, according to ESPN.

The Main Development: A Final Play That Never Finished

Washington had the ball at the Giants’ 24-yard line in overtime after Daron Payne forced a fumble from Cam Skattebo with two minutes left, setting up a short field for a potential winning kick. With 12 seconds remaining, the Commanders called a pass play. Daniels scrambled instead of throwing it away or getting out of bounds, and he was brought down for no gain. The clock ran out before Washington could spike the ball or line up for the attempt, which coach Dan Quinn’s team had been positioning for in the low 40-yard range, according to kicker Drew Stevens as cited by Sporting News.

Receiver Terry McLaurin offered a blunt assessment of the sequence. “Unacceptable,” he said after the tie.

What It Means: Coach And Quarterback Point To The Same Breakdown

Quinn did not place the mistake on his quarterback. He said the call should have been simpler: throw the ball away or get out of bounds, then spike it to stop the clock with time to spare for the field-goal unit. “The sequencing of that does not fall on (Daniels).

It’s an outside throw or a clock, an out of bounds throw, or a clock. That has to come from me. I have to put him in that spot.

I can do that earlier and we can finish the kick earlier. We don’t need to gain more yards,” Quinn told reporters.

Asked directly whether Daniels had been told to spike the ball in that situation, Quinn acknowledged the staff had not made that call clear in the moment. “No, we’re just trying to gain more. We don’t need to.

Easy enough to say, ‘Hey man, let’s clock it right here. We’re early enough. Go get it,'” Quinn said.

Daniels echoed that the fix starts with communication between himself and the offense before the snap, not just in the huddle. “It starts with everyone, top down,” he said, adding that he and his teammates need to be clearer about situational awareness in those closing seconds.

Context: Daniels’ Return And A Costly Result

The tie marked Daniels’ first game back since dislocating his left elbow in Week 2, an injury Total Apex Sports covered in detail after it happened. On the final drive before the botched play, Daniels completed three passes for 35 yards and added a 16-yard scramble, showing little hesitation in his throwing elbow. His performance, detailed by CBS Sports, was overshadowed by the finish.

Quinn did not hide his frustration on the sideline, slamming his headset after the final whistle. “Leaving tonight with a tie feels like a loss,” he said. Magic Johnson, a minority owner of the Commanders, also posted on social media expressing disbelief at the clock mismanagement, according to Sporting News.

The result dropped Washington to 1-3-1 on the season, while the Giants improved to 3-1-1. Total Apex Sports has tracked Daniels’ injury recovery through much of the past month, including his trend toward returning and the uncertainty that preceded his Week 4 status, detailed in coverage of his elbow status heading into that game.

What’s Next

Neither Daniels nor Quinn detailed specific adjustments the coaching staff plans to make to its late-game procedures beyond acknowledging the need for clearer communication in those situations. Washington will look to clean up its execution when it returns to action next week, with the Commanders still searching for their first win since Daniels’ return from injury.
