The Cincinnati Bengals are listening to trade offers for star Defensive End Trey Hendrickson after contract negotiations have stalled. This shocking NFL news was reported by multiple insiders earlier today. The Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, and Indianapolis are some of the teams that have checked in on the star player.
Things have gotten messy between Hendrickson and the franchise this offseason. The defensive player has not been shy about his issues with the team over the last few months. The issues began before OTAs when Head Coach Zac Taylor texted the star player about possible fines if he did not show up to work.
Hendrickson then posted on social media on the eve of training camp that he was driving down to Florida. He eventually reported to camp with no contract news to report. With the two sides reportedly not any closer on a contract, the Bengals began listening to trade offers. How will this situation resolve itself?
Cincinnati Bengals Season Outlook
The Cincinnati Bengals have been habitually slow starters during Taylor’s time at the helm. Cincinnati is 1-11 in the team’s first two weeks since he became head coach. This troubling trend has caused Taylor to make changes to the team’s offseason program. The two most tangible changes were playing the starters during the preseason and starting meetings earlier to help the day get off to a good start.
Only time will tell if these measures will be effective, but without Hendrickson suiting up, it may not make much of a difference. Cincinnati’s defense last season was horrendous. It led to them missing the playoffs for the second straight season. Hendrickson, the team’s best defensive player, has been at odds with the franchise for months. The team decided to prioritize the signings of wide receiving tandem Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase, while the star defensive player’s contract negotiations seemingly fell by the wayside.
Final Thoughts
Time is running out for Hendrickson and the Bengals to agree on a contract. Frankly, with both sides so dug in, a reconciliation seems less likely by the day. It may be in the best interest of both parties to go their separate ways. The team can get a good package for the star defender, and the player can suit up for a new team in 2025 with a lucrative contract extension in hand.
