The Cam Skattebo benching became official on Sunday when the New York Giants running back played six snaps against the New Orleans Saints and did not touch the ball once. The Giants lost 34-27, falling to a struggling 2026 campaign that now includes questions about their backfield plan.

Skattebo had started every game for the Giants through the first five weeks of the season. That streak ended in Week 6, with Najee Harris appearing on track to start before kickoff, according to CBS Sports. Harris, Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary all recorded rushing attempts in the first quarter while Skattebo stood on the sideline without a carry.

The Main Development

Skattebo did not log a single carry through three quarters, and that total never changed by the final whistle, according to Sporting News. The New York Post reported that Skattebo was benched due to ball-security issues, tying the decision directly to his performance a week earlier against the Washington Commanders.

In that Week 5 game, Skattebo fumbled in overtime, putting Washington in position to win. The Commanders instead let the clock expire without attempting a field goal, and the game ended in a tie. That fumble marked his fourth in 81 attempts this season, a sharp decline from his rookie year, when he put the ball on the ground just once in 101 carries.

What It Means

The benching sends a clear signal about how the Giants are weighing ball security against production. Skattebo averaged 3.6 yards per carry through his first five games, a modest number that made the fumble total harder to overlook. Tracy capitalized on the increased workload in Week 6, posting six carries that included a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown.

Skattebo built his reputation as a dual-threat back who contributes as a receiver as well as a runner. Going six snaps without a single touch, whether by design or in-game circumstance, removed him from both roles entirely for the first time all season.

Context

Skattebo led the Giants with 81 carries entering Week 6, making him the clear workload leader before the demotion. The shift toward Harris, Tracy and Singletary spreads those carries across a committee, at least for this game. No team official or coach has publicly detailed the reasoning behind the move beyond the ball-security concerns reported by the Post, and Skattebo has not issued a public response to losing his starting job.

What’s Next

The Giants have not announced whether Skattebo will return to a featured role or remain in a reduced capacity going forward. His next opportunity to reclaim touches comes in Week 7, when New York will look to stabilize an offense that managed only 27 points in a loss that also saw quarterback Jameis Winston benched during a rally led by J.J. McCarthy, according to the New York Post.
