The Los Angeles Lakers announced Thursday that Bronny James and Cameron Carr have been assigned to the Coachella Valley Lakers, the franchise’s G League affiliate, ahead of the minor-league club’s season opener Friday in Palm Desert. The Bronny James G League assignment comes as the 22-year-old guard has struggled to carve out consistent minutes in his third NBA season.
James has appeared in 74 career games across three seasons with the Lakers, including five this season, averaging 2.5 points and one assist in 7.7 minutes per game. Carr, the No. 24 overall pick in the 2026 NBA draft, has played in just three games with Los Angeles and has no recorded statistics.
The Main Development
Both players will suit up for Coachella Valley as the G League team opens its campaign. The assignment allows James and Carr to get consistent game action that has not been available to them on the Lakers’ bench this season.
James scored in wins over the Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors earlier this season, but those moments have been the exception rather than the rule. In the preseason, he never scored more than four points across a five-game stretch, and he appeared in 42 games during his sophomore year with mixed results.
What It Means
The move signals that Lakers coach JJ Redick does not currently view James as a viable rotational piece. Redick has already said publicly that James has not played well in the preseason, a sentiment that lines up with the limited minutes he has received through five regular-season games.
James is a USC product who has flashed occasional defensive upside in short bursts and has shown improvement in his shooting on increased attempts, according to Sporting News. Those flashes have not been enough to earn him a steady role behind a crowded Lakers backcourt.
Context: A Crowded Guard Rotation
Los Angeles enters the assignment with Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves as starting guards, Collin Sexton and Quentin Grimes serving as the main reserves, and Jaden Hardy available as an additional depth option. That depth chart leaves little room for James to find consistent minutes at the NBA level right now.
The roster crunch comes in a season already reshaped by other moves. The Lakers recently waived Dalton Knecht ahead of the season opener after a difficult roster decision that one report called a tough 16-to-15 cut. Los Angeles also enters this season without LeBron James on the roster, according to the New York Post, a change that has altered the makeup of the team entirely.
What’s Next
Bronny James and Carr are set to make their Coachella Valley debuts Friday in Palm Desert as the G League affiliate opens its season. No timetable has been given for how long the assignment will last or when either player might return to the Lakers’ active roster.
