Great Britain’s Jack Draper has been on a tear at the 2024 US Open. In what proved to be a shocking turn of events, Draper was pitted instead against Botic van de Zandschulp in the third round, rather than the expected one against No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz fell unexpectedly to van de Zandschulp, and thus an opportunity dropped into the hands of Draper, which he grabbed.
Straight Sets Victory
Draper wasted no time to get down to business against his new rival. On a breezy Saturday afternoon, Jack Draper stepped onto Grandstand and dismissed van de Zandschulp in straight sets: 6-3, 6-1, 7-6(3). It was an amazing performance, testimony to the fact that he could adapt quickly and dominate even on the Grand Slam stage.
Success isn’t exactly an accident for Jack Draper. With tennis running in his family, his journey began at a tender age. His father, Roger, was the former chief executive of the Lawn Tennis Association, while his mother, Nicky, used to be a British tennis champion. So, it is no surprise that Jack Draper started playing at three years old. That early beginning has paid dividends now.
Despite his rarefied upbringing, Jack Draper did not have it easy. He remembers often being treated with jealousy and skepticism by those of his peer group who resented his privileged position. In his humbleness, he senses that such reactions are part of the cutthroat landscape of professional sports.
A Star On The Rise
People have been keeping an eye on Draper for a couple of years now. As known for his modeling gigs as he is for his on-court skills, Draper cuts a unique figure. His game leads with a heavy forehand, a strong serve, and the ability to volley well at the net. His two-handed backhand is a real weapon as well.
A shoulder injury ruined Draper’s season last year, which dropped his ranking outside of the Top 100. He was still able to fight his way to the Round of 16 at the US Open, though. This year, he is working his way back to No. 25 in the rankings courtesy of a slew of impressive performances.
Jack Draper’s Versatility and Determination
First, Draper has been working his way up to bring more variety to his game. Complementing his powerful shots, he learned how to employ techniques like short balls, serve-and-volley plays, and drop shots. Of course, standing at 6-foot-4 offers height as an advantage, yet his agility and the ability to adjust make all the difference.
As Jack Draper advances, he is also working on his mental fortitude. He’s learning to pace through the best-of-five-set matches, keeping energy at the end of very long matches. That is a mental adjustment that he will have to make as he goes deeper into this tournament.
Draper wants more, and his eyes are on better things yet. That effort he put in, along with his resilience proved paramount in his performance at the 2024 US Open. Heading into the Round of 16, it is indeed fascinating to see just how far this talented Brit can go. Jack Draper is one such talent to look out for, as bright things lie ahead for him in this sport.
