Brad Ausmus could still land the Houston Astros‘ open managerial job even after interviewing for the general manager role last week, according to multiple sources. Ausmus was at Astros offices at Daikin Park on Thursday, the day before Randy Flores was hired as general manager.

One source said Ausmus was interviewing for the GM position that day, but the Astros could still give him a look for the manager job. He caught more games than any other catcher in Astros history over 10 seasons, won three Gold Gloves with Houston, and has close ties to Astros senior advisor Jeff Bagwell. The Astros have a managerial vacancy after declining to renew Joe Espada’s contract following three seasons.

The Details

Ausmus, who has spent the last three seasons as bench coach for the New York Yankees, is among candidates being considered. According to MLB.com, the Astros expect to move fast to fill the vacancy now that Flores is in place, with the General Managers Meetings beginning next week in Las Vegas.s contract following three seasons on the job. Ausmus, a former Astros catcher, has spent the last three seasons as bench coach for the New York Yankees.

According to the source cited by MLB.com, Ausmus’s presence in Houston on Thursday was tied to the general manager search rather than a formal manager interview. The source indicated the door has not closed on Ausmus for the top dugout job, even as Flores takes over as GM.

What’s Next

Ausmus, 57, interviewed for the Astros manager position in 2020 before Dusty Baker was hired and was a finalist for the general manager job before Dana Brown was hired ahead of the 2023 season. He managed the Tigers from 2014-17 and the Angels in 2019, going 386-422 combined.

No timeline has been reported for when the Astros plan to finalize their managerial hire. Flores will be introduced to the media Monday, and the Astros plan to move fast to fill the vacancy before the General Managers Meetings begin next week in Las Vegas.
