The Boston Red Sox are set to make Major League Baseball history because of the quality of the starting pitchers on the opposing team. They will be the first team in league history to face the reigning Cy Young Award winners in both leagues in consecutive games. Boston battered reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal on Wednesday. He surrendered five earned runs over 6.1 innings of work. His ERA jumped from 2.08 to 2.67 in the start. Detroit prevailed 6-5 on a walk-off single by Justyn-Henry Malloy.
The Red Sox will face another stiff test tomorrow night on the road against reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Chris Sale. He has not pitched like a Cy Young early in the 2025 campaign. Sale is 1-3 with a 3.97 ERA, but is eighth in the league in strikeouts. How will the Boston Red Sox fare on Friday against another top-flight pitcher?

It has been a mediocre start to the regular season for the Red Sox. They are 22-23. Their offense has been strong. They are eighth in batting average, seventh in home runs, and sixth in runs scored. Third Baseman Alex Bregman has lived up to the contract he signed with the team this offseason. He is 11th in the league in batting average, eighth in home runs, sixth in RBI, and sixth in OPS.
Boston’s pitching staff has been middling this year. They are 17th in ERA, 11th in strikeouts, and 23rd in opposing batting average. Starting Pitcher Garrett Crochet has been solid this year. He is seventh in the league in ERA and tied for fifth in strikeouts. Boston’s pitching staff must pick up the slack for the team to reach its full potential.
Final Thoughts
The Boston Red Sox will face Sale and the Atlanta Braves tomorrow night. They will look to experience similar success to how they fared against Skubal. Boston has one more game to navigate against a former Cy Young Award winner.
