The Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams meet Monday, Oct. 12 at SoFi Stadium in a Bills vs Rams Monday Night Football matchup that both franchises entered the season hoping would preview a Super Bowl showdown. Buffalo brings a 3-1 record into Inglewood, California, while Los Angeles sits at 2-2 after rallying past Philadelphia in its last outing, according to CBS Sports.

Quarterback Josh Allen leads a Bills offense averaging 31.8 points per game against a Rams defense that ranks second in the NFL in total yards allowed. That collision, between one of the league’s most explosive quarterbacks and one of its stingiest units through four weeks, is the central storyline of Week 5’s marquee prime-time game.

Buffalo Bills Outlook

Buffalo’s offense has carried the team to its 3-1 start, averaging 31.8 points per game behind Josh Allen, who has thrown for 1,039 yards with six touchdowns against three interceptions. Allen’s 100.1 passer rating and 8.7 yards per pass attempt reflect an offense that converts on 53.33% of third downs and scores touchdowns on 68.8% of red-zone trips.

James Cook III has rushed for 421 yards and three touchdowns, helping Buffalo average 139 yards per game on the ground. The concern is on the other side of the ball. The Bills rank 25th in points allowed and 27th in yards allowed, according to Yahoo Sports, and their secondary is thin.

Christian Benford (toe), Dee Alford (ankle) and Te’Cory Couch (hamstring) are all dealing with cornerback injuries, per CBS Sports, with Benford and Alford both listed as questionable on the injury report along with defensive linemen Landon Jackson and Ed Oliver and receiver DJ Moore. Buffalo is coming off a 29-26 loss to New England, its first setback of the season.

Los Angeles Rams Outlook

The Rams enter at 2-2 but have been statistically dominant on defense, ranking second in the league in both total yards allowed (247.5 per game) and passing yards allowed (145.5 per game). Cornerback Trent McDuffie has allowed just seven completions for 42 yards on 21 targets against him, a 22.5 quarterback rating, according to Yahoo Sports.

Offensively, Matthew Stafford, 38, the reigning 2025 NFL MVP, has thrown for 1,189 yards with six touchdowns and six interceptions. He closed out the win over Philadelphia by going 12 of 16 for 133 yards over the final two drives, part of a 415-172 yardage advantage that made the Rams the first team since the 1949 Eagles to outgain an opponent by more than 200 yards in three consecutive games. Running back Kyren Williams scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns in that comeback, including the go-ahead score, and added a career-high 10 catches for 67 yards.

Receiver Puka Nacua is back after missing two games with a hip and groin injury. Several Rams defenders, including cornerback Jaylen Watson, linebacker Nate Landman, safety Quentin Lake and linebackers Grant Stuard and Josaiah Stewart, are listed as questionable for Monday.

Key Matchup

The game’s defining battle is the Rams’ passing attack against a Buffalo secondary already stretched by injury, according to CBS Sports. Los Angeles is averaging 300.5 passing yards per game, and with Nacua back alongside Davante Adams, who has 390 receiving yards and two touchdowns this season, Stafford has multiple weapons to target a Bills defense ranked 27th in total yards allowed.

Buffalo defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard will need to generate pressure to disrupt Stafford’s rhythm, a point raised by Yahoo Sports ahead of the game. On the other side, the Rams’ top-ranked pass defense, led by McDuffie, will try to slow Allen, who has run for three touchdowns and passed for three in a game against this same Rams defense before. One Rams defender, discussing the challenge of facing Allen, said, “He’s probably a lot more fun when you don’t got to tackle him.

But, hey, anytime you get to compete against the best, it is fun.” Another added, “As a football fan, man, I respect his game a lot. You know, he’s a generational talent.”

Players To Watch

Josh Allen, QB, Bills

Allen has historically thrived in Los Angeles, leading Buffalo to 30, 31 and 42 points in three visits since the Rams returned to the city in 2016. The Bills have scored at least 30 points in four straight games against the Rams and in eight of the last nine meetings between the teams.

Matthew Stafford, QB, Rams

Stafford’s finish against Philadelphia, 12 of 16 for 133 yards over the final two drives, shows the kind of closing performance the Rams will need against a Buffalo offense capable of scoring quickly.

Trent McDuffie, CB, Rams

McDuffie’s early-season numbers, allowing just 42 yards on 21 targets, make him the player most likely to be tasked with limiting Buffalo’s top receiving options.

What To Watch

The last meeting between these teams, a 44-42 Rams win on Dec. 8, 2024, saw Allen become the first player in the Super Bowl era to rush for three touchdowns and pass for three touchdowns in the same game. History aside, Monday’s result carries weight for two teams built with Super Bowl aspirations this season, according to CBS Sports. A win would move either club closer to a tiebreaker edge and quiet questions about a defense, Buffalo’s or a secondary banged up by injury, Los Angeles’, that has been picked apart through the first month.

Buffalo head coach Joe Brady will look to keep his offense’s red-zone efficiency intact against a Rams defense that has not allowed many big plays through the air. The Bills’ next game after Monday has not yet been detailed in the current reporting.
