Baltimore Orioles Reportedly Listening on Adley Rutschman

As the MLB trade deadline approaches, Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman has emerged as one of the more surprising names being discussed around the league.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel, the Orioles are “certainly listening” to trade proposals involving Rutschman. However, there’s a major difference between taking calls and actively shopping a player. Baltimore reportedly is not looking to move the three-time All-Star, making any potential deal a long shot.

Still, the fact that the Orioles are willing to listen has created plenty of intrigue across baseball.

Baltimore Orioles Aren’t Shopping Rutschman

The key takeaway from the latest reports is that Baltimore isn’t actively trying to trade its franchise catcher.

Teams routinely listen to offers on star players, especially near the trade deadline. That doesn’t mean they’re eager to complete a deal. In Adley Rutschman’s case, the Orioles appear willing to hear what opposing clubs have to say but are far from committed to moving him.

Given his track record and importance to the organization, that approach makes sense. Rutschman has been one of the faces of the franchise since arriving in the majors and remains a crucial piece of Baltimore’s long-term plans.

Injury Concerns Complicate His Value

Part of the challenge in evaluating Adley Rutschman’s trade market is his recent injury history.

The catcher was placed on the injured list this week because of wrist inflammation, marking his third IL stint of the season and fifth since the start of the 2025 campaign.

Those injuries are likely giving potential buyers pause. When healthy, Rutschman remains one of the most productive catchers in baseball. However, availability matters, especially for contenders looking to make a deep postseason run.

Any team considering a blockbuster offer would need confidence that his health issues won’t continue to be a long-term concern.

Rutschman Has Rebounded at the Plate

Despite the injuries, Rutschman has enjoyed a strong bounce-back season offensively.

He’s hitting .251/.331/.433 with a .764 OPS, putting him on pace for his best offensive season since 2023. His 2.3 fWAR has already nearly doubled his total from all of last season, highlighting how effective he’s been when in the lineup.

That’s one reason teams continue to view him as such a valuable asset.

Elite offensive catchers are rare. Catchers who can hit, manage a pitching staff, and remain under team control are even rarer.

Contract Status Makes Him Extremely Valuable

Another factor working against a trade is Rutschman’s contract situation.

He’s under team control through the 2027 season, meaning Baltimore doesn’t face any immediate pressure to move him.

Unlike many deadline candidates who are nearing free agency, Rutschman offers both present production and future value.

For the Orioles, that means there is little reason to sell low. Any team hoping to acquire him would almost certainly need to make an overwhelming offer to get Baltimore’s attention.

Yankees and Rays Could Use Catching Help

The timing of the rumors is interesting because several contenders are searching for upgrades behind the plate.

The Yankees have received little production from their catching group this season, while the Rays could also benefit from additional offensive help as they battle for the AL East title.

However, even if Baltimore were more open to moving Rutschman, dealing him to a division rival would be difficult to justify.

The Orioles likely have little interest in helping either the Yankees or Rays improve their World Series chances, especially with all three clubs competing for playoff positioning.

Baltimore’s Deadline Direction Remains Unclear

The Orioles also haven’t fully committed to being sellers. Despite a 49-52 record, Baltimore remains just three games behind a Wild Card spot. A recent seven-game winning streak helped keep their postseason hopes alive and complicated any deadline decisions.

That makes a Rutschman trade even less likely.

If the Orioles believe they still have a realistic chance to reach October, moving one of their best players would send the wrong message to both the clubhouse and fan base.

Listening Doesn’t Mean Trading

For now, the most important distinction is that Baltimore is listening, not selling.

Rutschman remains one of the most valuable catchers in baseball when healthy, and his combination of production, leadership, and team control makes him incredibly difficult to replace.

The Orioles may continue fielding calls over the next two weeks, but unless another team presents a massive offer, it’s hard to envision Baltimore parting with one of the faces of the franchise before the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
