Indiana Fever center Aliyah Boston underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair her right knee, according to CBS Sports. The procedure addresses an injury Boston first suffered in late February while playing for Unrivaled, the 3-on-3 offseason league, and then played through for most of the 2026 WNBA season.

Boston’s knee trouble forced her out of the rest of her Unrivaled season and led her to withdraw from Team USA’s roster for the FIBA Women’s World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Puerto Rico in March. She discussed the injury that month on her podcast with Candace Parker, saying it wasn’t tied to one specific play.

“It wasn’t like a specific play that happened, it was just like the feeling that I had,” Boston said. “And honestly, I felt like I was 15 steps behind everything that was going on. Like I literally just felt like I was moving so slow.”

What The Team And Boston Have Said About The Knee Injury

The Fever never officially confirmed the nature of Boston’s injury during the season, though a meniscus issue was widely understood around the league. Indiana ruled her out for the first time in her career on May 17 against the Seattle Storm, and she ultimately sat out four games during the regular season because of the right lower leg issue.

Fever coach Stephanie White explained the team’s cautious handling of Boston’s workload early in the year. “It’s still early, and so there’s no reason to really push anything,” White said. “And we want to make sure that we are utilizing an abundance of caution.”

The Fever have not announced a recovery timeline, but the 2027 WNBA season is seven months away. Atlanta Dream center Brionna Jones offers a point of comparison: she had meniscus surgery in February and was back on the court by July.

Who Fills In For Boston In The Frontcourt

No corresponding transaction or temporary replacement move has been reported since the surgery took place after Indiana’s season ended. Fever GM Amber Cox has already pointed to frontcourt depth and perimeter defense as roster needs heading into the offseason, according to Sporting News. Boston’s central role at both ends of the floor makes depth behind her a priority as the front office plans its next moves.

Boston’s Season Numbers Despite Playing Hurt

Boston still turned in a career-best campaign while managing the knee issue. She averaged 16.1 points, eight rebounds, three assists, 1.5 steals and 1.2 blocks during the regular season and earned her fourth straight All-Star selection.

Her production climbed further in the playoffs, where she averaged 19.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block while shooting 58.1% before the Fever were eliminated by the Las Vegas Aces in the first round.

Boston reflected on the toll the injury took over the course of the year. “I definitely started the year with a lot of uncertainty,” she said. “I think there were definitely some games where I was hindered a little bit, and then obviously we know I missed some games.

It definitely was a change for me because I’m somebody that just loves competing, loves to play and I never like to sit out. It definitely had its impact, but we made it through a full season, so we’re grateful.”

What Comes Next For Boston And The Fever

Nothing in the surgical report points to Boston being a diminished player once she recovers. The Fever have not issued an official return timeline, and the next confirmed marker is the start of the 2027 WNBA season, when Boston is expected to be ready for training camp pending further word from the team. Indiana’s offseason moves, including how it addresses frontcourt depth, will shape the roster she returns to, a storyline already playing out in Sophie Cunningham’s free agency situation and Kelsey Mitchell’s free agency decision.
