The San Francisco 49ers beat the Seattle Seahawks 32-29 on Sunday at Lumen Field, improving to 5-0 and as turnovers proved decisive in a game decided by three points. Purdy threw two touchdown passes and Mike Evans caught seven passes for 113 yards as the 49ers reached 5-0.
Seattle dropped to 3-2 despite finishing with 251 total yards to San Francisco’s 269. The Seahawks’ four turnovers, including two lost fumbles and two interceptions, proved too costly against a 49ers defense that scored on a fumble recovery and set up another touchdown off a Renardo Green interception.
Takeaways From 49ers’ Win Over Seahawks
Turnovers decided a yardage battle Seattle otherwise won
Seattle ran 60 plays to San Francisco’s 56 and finished with more first downs on penalties, yet the Seahawks turned the ball over four times compared to three for the 49ers. San Francisco converted those takeaways directly into points, scoring off Renardo Green’s first-quarter interception and recovering a Gracen Halton forced fumble for a touchdown. Seattle finished with two interceptions thrown by Sam Darnold and two lost fumbles, a total that outweighed its 18-yard total-yardage edge.
A rematch of last January’s blowout played out differently
The teams’ previous meeting came in last January’s NFC divisional playoff, when Seattle won 41-6 on its way to Super Bowl LX. San Francisco entered Sunday as one of three remaining unbeaten teams in Week 5, ranking second in the NFL at 30.5 points per game and leading the league in points per play at 6.8. Kenneth Walker III, who scored three touchdowns against San Francisco in that playoff win, did not play Sunday.
Seattle’s third-down issues resurfaced in key spots
The Seahawks finished 3 of 12 on third downs after entering the week ranked 31st in the NFL in that category. San Francisco converted 4 of 12 third downs. Byron Murphy II had two sacks and led the defense with 6 tackles, but San Francisco’s defense converted turnovers into touchdowns more efficiently than Seattle converted its defensive stops.
Player Of The Game: Mike Evans
Evans caught 7 of 10 targets for 113 yards and a touchdown. He hauled in the 2-yard score that opened the scoring and added the two-point conversion catch in the fourth quarter that put San Francisco ahead 29-26. Purdy finished 19 of 29 for 189 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Christian McCaffrey ran for 68 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.
49ers Vs Seahawks By The Numbers
The 49ers led 21-13 at halftime before Seattle scored 16 straight third-quarter points to take a 26-21 lead. Jason Myers made all 5 field goal attempts, including 49, 50, 43 and 48-yard kicks, for 17 points. Fred Warner led all players with 10 tackles.
Emanuel Wilson rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries to lead Seattle’s ground game. Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught 5 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown for Seattle.
What’s Next
San Francisco improved to 5-0. Seattle fell to 3-2. The 49ers played without defensive end Nick Bosa (knee/calf injury) for a third straight game and without fullback Kyle Juszczyk (knee injury). Mykel Williams made his season debut for San Francisco.
