Yankees Jump Out To Early Lead; Finish Off Guardians 7-5

Jun 8, 2026; Cleveland, Ohio, USA; New York Yankees designated hitter Paul Goldschmidt (48) celebrates with first baseman Ben Rice (22) after hitting a home run during the first inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field.

The Yankees jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in this game, but blew that lead, and it was a 3-3 game after just three innings. This was surprising because the starting pitchers for this game were Will Warren and Gavin Williams, both of whom have pitched well this season.

The Yankees blew a winnable game and won 7-5. Now the Pinstripers have gotten past Will Warren and Ryan Weathers. They now turn to the top of their pitching rotation and must continue to get good performances from their starting pitchers in the absence of Aaron Judge. Do you think the Yankees’ strong starting pitching will carry them through the Judge injury?

The Bronx Bombers need to keep winning amid the injuries to the Judge and the others. To do so, they need to continue to get great starting pitching. This was an odd game, with the Yanks jumping out to an early 3-0 lead and Cleveland tying it up quickly. Here is how the game played out.

In the first inning, Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run home run, and Ben Rice scored. The team extended its lead to 3-0 in the third inning as Cody Bellinger grounded out and Trent Grisham scored. Bellinger advanced to second base on a throwing error by Cleveland shortstop Brayan Rocchio.

However, the lead was not long-lived. Cleveland scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning. First, Will Warren threw a wild pitch with Steven Kwan on third base. Then, Brayan Rochio grounded out, and Patrick Bailey scored. It was 3-2. Finally, Kyle Manzardo grounded into a fielder’s choice, and Jose Ramirez scored. The game was tied at 3.

Ryan McMahon hit a solo home run for the Bombers in the fifth inning. That home run gave the Yanks a 4-3 lead. In the sixth inning, Angel Martinez hit a two-run home run, and David Fry scored. That made it 5-4 Guardians.

In the eighth inning, Goldschmidt grounded into a fielder’s choice, and Trent Grisham scored. It was a 5-5 game. In the tenth inning, Bellinger hit a huge two-run single. Both Ali Sanchez and Ben Rice scored. It was 7-5 Yankees.

Walk Him

Jose Ramirez kills the Yankees, and he scored tonight in the third inning. In the series last week at Yankee Stadium, Ramirez was 6 for 9 in the first two games. He had three doubles, a home run, drove in one, and scored three runs. He ran wild on the Yanks. He is batting .412 at Yankee Stadium and in excess of .330 in all games against the Bombers. Cleveland does have a lot of hitters who can hurt you, and they do have more platoon advantages than any other team in baseball, but the Yankees should consider walking him. It would be wise for the team not to allow him to beat them.

Pitch Efficient

One of the things you will hear now, especially with the obsession with getting starting pitchers out of the game with around 100 pitches, is pitch efficiency. Because starting pitchers pitch so few pitches in their starts, and starters are the best pitchers on the team, they must get quick outs. That means few, or no, three-ball counts, and no walks. It is also a problem when batters foul off a bunch of pitches. If a batter has a ten-pitch at bat, that is ten percent of the pitches a starting pitcher is expected to throw.

Even when a pitcher strikes out the side, as Will Warren did in the first inning of this game, the pitch count can creep up. Warren threw 20 pitches in the first inning tonight. That is not a good way to start a game, even though the result was good for the Yankees. He was doomed to a short outing. He only pitched four and a third innings.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Yankees won this game in ten innings, 7-5. They were 0-3 in extra innings this season. Cody Bellinger was the player of the game. He had a huge single in the tenth inning that scored two runs. These two teams continue their series tomorrow night at 6:40.

Concusion

The Bombers just need to play .500 baseball while Aaron Judge is out injured. Their struggles against good teams are noteworthy. They need their starting pitchers to pitch well, and they need their relief pitchers to throw strikes, not to give up two-run home runs like Paul Blackburn did tonight.
