Yankees Lose to Cleveland 5-4 Behind a Weak Start From Gerrit Cole

May 27, 2026; Kansas City, Missouri, USA; New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole (45) delivers a pitch against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

The Yankees lost to the Cleveland Guardians 5-4 behind a weak start start from Gerrit Cole. He was unscored upon in his first two starts of the year. He did allow runs, but was still good. It was touch-and-go with the shaky Yankee bullpen. However, reinforcements are on the way as news broke yesterday that minor leaguer Carlos Lagange will be moved to the bullpen at AAA Scranton.

The Yankees batting order is not scarey at all without both Judge and Stanton. They say the best ability is availibility. That is the problem here. The team’s starting rotation will have to be very good while the offensive stars for the team are out. How long do you think Judge and Stanton will be out?

The Yankees starting piching has been very good this season, it will nows need to be even better with the bullpen ineffective and injuries affecting the Yankees batting order. This game was not a sterling example as previously unscored upon Garrit Cole gave up two home runs in the first three innings.

In the second inning, Kyle Manzardo hit a home run and the Guardians led 1-0. Jazz Chisolom Jr. hit a home run for the Yankees in the bottom of the second inning, tying the score. Ryhs Hoskins untied the game with a two-run home run in the fourth inning. He also worked a walk agaoinst Cole in the sixth inning and had an important run batted in the eighth inning.

The Bronx Bombers got one of those runs back in the home half of the fourth inning. Jose Cabaerollo hit a solo home run making it 3-2 Guardians. They were hoping that Cole, and the rest of the pitchers could hold the Guardians to just three runs.

However, that was not the case. Jose Ramirez, that man again, hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to make the score 4-2. Cole was pulled from the game shortly after that, after he put baserunners on first ans second base.

The Yankees manufactured a run in the sixth inning as Cody Bellinger had a sacrifice fly. However, in the eigth inning Ryhs Hoskins hit a single and Jose Ramirez scored. That man kills the Yankees. It was now 5-3 and that run proved important. As Cody Bellinger hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom on the ninth inning. That made the score 5-4. The final score of the game.

Judge Options

Nobody knows at this time how long Aaron Judge will be on the bench with his rib cage bone bruise. The injury has been bothering him for a couple of weeks, and explains his recent offensive struggles. However, with him out of the lineup injured, and Giancarlo Stanton in jured as well, the Yankees are experiencing a major power outage. So, what do the Yankees do if Aaron Judge is going to be out for a while?

There are a couple of options. First, Jasson Dominguez is going to be back soon. He can play outfield, but he does not replace Aaron Judge in the lineup. Another option for the team is to promote Spencer Jones again. He is as large as Judge and Stanton, but has stuck out a lot at AAA Scranton after his brief stint with the big club. It turns out, Aaron Judge is likely irreplacable.
