Yankees Lose to the Guardians 9-4 as Paul Goldschmidt Tallies Four RBIs

Jun 2, 2026; Bronx, New York, USA; New York Yankees first baseman Paul Goldschmidt (48) celebrates with first baseman Ben Rice (22) after hitting a two run home run during the third inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees lost to the Cleveland Guardians 9-4 in a game where Cy Young candidate Cam Schlittler did not have his best stuff. The Guardians are a tough opponent. They are in first place in the American League Central Division. On the good news front, Paul Goldschmidt had four runs batted in, and the Rays lost.

Today was a special day in Yankees history. On this date in 1941, Lou Gehrig died. He was known as the Iron Horse, and he played in 2,130 consecutive games. He filled in for Wally Pipp, who had a headache. Pipp never got his job back. Do you think Gherig was the luckiest man on the face of the Earth?

The Yankees faced a tough opponent in the Cleveland Guardians, who are leading the American League Central Division. The Guardians are also an opponent that seems to match up well with the Bombers, and they have one player who destroys the Yankees.

The Guardians scored first on a sacrifice fly, but then the Yankees took a 2-1 lead when Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning. That lead did not last long as Kyle Manzardo hit a two-run home run for Cleveland in the top of the fourth inning. It was 3-2, Cleveland.

The Yankees came back again when Goldschmidt singled in two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. However, in the top of the fifth inning, the Guardians scored two more runs. They retook the lead. 5-4.

Cleveland scored another run in the top of the seventh inning, when Jose Ramirez hit his third double of the game. They extended their lead to 6-4. Things then got worse for the Yankees in the eighth inning as Travis Bazzana hit a bases-clearing double with the bases loaded. That was against Camilo Doval, who seems to give up runs every time he comes into the game. That made the score 9-4, the game’s final score.

Jose Ramirez Ageless Wonder

Jose Ramirez kills the Yankees. He is 33 years old and is only hitting .237 this year. However, he came into this game with a .332 batting average against the Yankees. In this game, he was three for four with three doubles and two runs batted in. More importantly, he seemed to be in the middle of every rally for Cleveland. You would think he was from the Bronx, but he is not. He is from the Dominican Republic.

The Guardians were 7 for 12 with runners in scoring position. That is how they scored nine runs against the Yankees. It was the third time the Bronx Bombers had given up nine runs in a game this season. It seemed like Ramirez was in the middle of all those rallies.

Lou Gherig Day

June 2 is the anniversary of the death of Lou Gehrig. He died of the disease that now bears his name. His death shocked the nation. Not only was he a star for the Yankees, but he also never came out of the lineup. He played 2,130 consecutive games at a very high level.

Gerrit Cole Pitches

Scheduled to pitch tomorrow for the Yankees is Gerrit Cole. The ongoing saga of his return from injury is one of the biggest stories in sports. He missed 569 days for the team before he returned two games ago. He has not been scored upon in either of those two games. That means his earned run average is 0.00 so far this season.

Aaron Judge Out

Aaron Judge missed this game for the Yankees. He has a bone bruise in his rib cage, and the manager of the Yankees, Aaron Boone, said he is day-to-day with the injury. He is very important to the batting order, especially with Giancarlo Stanton out.

Conclusion

The Guardians always seem to play the Yankees tough. That was certainly the case tonight. Now the Bombers will have to rely on the Cole start; he will allow a run at some point this year, maybe today. The bad news is the Yanks are facing another tough pitcher today.
