Yankees Beat the Cubs 2-0 As Trade Deadline Approaches

Will Warren of the New York Yankees

The Yankees now have an unbelievable set of injuries. The offensive drought continued, but the team won 2-0. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was not in the lineup today with cramping in his hamstring; he is supposed to be back tomorrow, as we start August. That is good, but the team still has to deal with a raft of injuries.

With the last two losses, both walk-offs courtesy of the White Sox, the Yankees have fallen three and a half games behind the Rays. That team is at home, and they basically do not lose at home. Unless the team makes some big waves in the trade market, the Rays will win the division. Do you think the Yankees will make significant trades?

The Yankees and the Cubs were hoping to play the game quickly and avoid the forecast heavy rain at about 4:30 Eastern (the game started at 2:20. It rained lightly for the entire game. It is very frustrating for the Bombers these days, as they are getting great pitching and not scoring many runs. That pattern repeated itself today in the Will Warren start. Here is how the game played out.

In the fourth inning, Amed Rosario hit a solo home run, and the Yankees led 1-0. In this game, he was batting third. In the fifth inning, Spencer Jones hit a solo home run, and the Bombers led 2-0. That home run was against a left-handed pitcher. The Cubs give up a lot of home runs, and the Bronx Bombers, even this lineup, hit a lot of home runs. 2-0 was the final score of the game.

Same Hotel and Familiarity

The Yankees just split a four-game series with the White Sox in Chicago. They stayed in the second city for a three-game series against the Cubs. That is a rare road trip, and a welcome respite for the players on the team.

It is a shame that Cody Bellinger was hurt for this game; he played for both teams. Also, viewers of the YES Network telecast were treated to some home cooking from Joe Girardi. Not only did he play for the Cubs, but he is from Chicago and went to Northwestern.

Conclusion

There were a lot of stars at the rainy game between these two marquee teams. Alex Rodriguez attended the game, and so did Bill Murray. His brother, Joel, sang, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” There was not, however, a Ferris Bueller sighting. Unfortunately, the game was plagued by rain. However, the Yankees’ bullpen is taxed, and they do not have a day off until next Thursday. It was good, however, that the serious rain came late in the game after both starting pitchers pitched a significant number of innings. The Yankees are 29-8 all-time against the Cubs (they swept the 1932 and 1938 World Series from them), so this result fit right in.
