Yankees Beat the Cubs 2-1 in Final Game of the Series at Wrigley Field

Gerrit Cole of the New York Yankees July 23, 2020

The Yankees were hoping to leverage the start of Gerrit Cole, who has started well in his last three outings. The team needed to come back from an ugly 5-2 loss last night. The Bombers need to bolster their batting order, so it will be interesting to see if they make any more trades by 6 pm tomorrow.

On the anniversary of the death of Thurman Munson, the Yankees got some good news. Per Meredith Morokovits, who is on the television broadcasts, Carlos Rodon is going to throw live at Yankee Stadium tomorrow. Clarke Schmidt will throw on Tuesday. Giancarlo Stanton is expected to hit both of those sessions. Do you think the Yankees will make any more trades?

The Yankees were hoping to ride the start of Gerrit Cole, who has pitched very well in his last three starts, to come back from their 5-2 loss yesterday. Things started well for the team on the scoreboard, but in the first three innings the team struck out 6 times.

In the third inning, Jose Caballero hit a two-run home run. Ryan McMahon also scored. It was 2-0 Yankees, and it was the first time in 42 innings that the Yankees had put up a crooked number.

In the fourth inning, Michael Busch singled, and Seiya Suzuki scored. It was 2-1 Yankees. It was concerning to see Gerrit Cole giving up a run, because the Yanks score so few. However, he got a double play in short order and got out of the inning, allowing only one run.

Collin Rea pitched for the Cubs, and the Yankees made him look like Cy Young. There was not much going on for them aside from the Caballero two-run home run.

2 August

August second is the day Thurman Munson, the Yankee catcher and captain, died in 1979. Munson should be in the Hall of Fame and is idolized by fans of the team. His catcher’s gear still hangs in the locker room. Today, Austin Wells had a Foo Man Choo, like Munson, and had his number and robust career statistics printed on the back strap of his chest protector as a tribute. Wells is having a terrible year, but that was a classy tribute.

It started cloudy in Chicago, but the sun came out, and ot turned into a nice day. Joe Girardi, who did the color commentary for the YES Network, played for the Cubs, and said he would check the weather before each game to see what type of game it was going to be. The weather has that big of an effect on games in Chicago. They do not call it the Windy City for nothing.

Conclusion

The Bombers got a big start from Gerrit Cole in this game. He allowed a run in the fifth inning, and that seemed to annoy him. In an interesting factoid, Wrigley Field is designated a National Historic Landmark. So, the Cubs can never tear it down. Another interesting factoid is that George Halas, Papa Bear, played for the Yankees in 1919.
