Fans of the New York Yankees are an entitled lot. They think the Yankees should win the World Series every year and think their home city is the capital of the world. One thing they are correct about, however, is that Yankee Stadium is the home office of baseball.
The owners have proposed having both a salary cap and a salary floor. The players flatly reject both ideas. In May 2026, the owners proposed a salary cap of $245.3 million and a floor of $171.2 million. What this means is that all teams will have to spend between that amount on their player salaries. The cap and floor would take effect in the 2027 season, and the owners argue that these measures are required to both stabilize local television deals and achieve cost certainty.
Baseball is the only North American professional sport that does not have some sort of salary control. The players have come out and rejected the proposal by the owners, and say that the salary cap and floor restrict market freedom. At the just-completed All-Star (internal link) game in Philadelphia, Major League Baseball stars Bryce Harper, Juan Soto, and Paul Skenes all came out and said the salary cap is a non-starter.
About Yankee Stadium
It is said that Yankee Stadium is the house Ruth built. He was traded from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees in 1921. Yankee Stadium opened in 1923. When it opened, it had the largest seating capacity in the Major Leagues and was one of the biggest Stadiums in the United States.
The Yankees stayed at the original Yankee Stadium through the 2008 season. They played there every season, except in 1974 and 1975 when it was renovated, and the team played in Shea Stadium, the new home of the New York Mets. The Yankees moved back in and stayed there until the Stadium was closed and demolished following the 2008 season.
The New Yankee Stadium
The new Yankee Stadium opened in 2009. The stadium kept many of the same features of the original one, like the frieze around the interior roof. The team also kept Monument Park (external link: ), just beyond the centerfield wall. Monument Park is a good example of what has changed in the new building. It is bigger, more spacious, and so are all the amenities in the new stadium.
The additional space is good, particularly the restrooms. The new Yankee Stadium was built just one block from the old one. It is dubbed The House the Jeter Built because in its first year of existence the Yankees won the World Series and Derek Jeter was the shortstop. Also of note, because he did so much for decades to build a new stadium, the World Series was won in the last year of George Steinbrenner’s life.

The Yankees lost the first game of a split doubleheader to the Pirates today. The teams had to play a doubleheader today because they got rained out last night. It did not matter to those who attended the game. They were, of course, upset the Yankees did not win. However, Gerrit Cole struck out a season-high 11 batters. Finally, closer David Bernard pitched in the ninth inning and did his usual high-wire act before getting out of the inning with no runs allowed
