The 69-year-old Otis Wilson and his wife entered a media-only elevator near the press box when a female security officer asked them to leave.
The officer asked Wilson and his wife to leave because the elevator was reserved for media only. Wilson said “OK then” but did not exit. She told him the elevator would not move until he got off.
What Happened
What followed turned physical. According to Monterrey Security, the private contractor that staffs Soldier Field, Wilson “aggressively threw the female officer into a wall,” leaving a large hole. A male officer intervened and separated Wilson from her.
The officer, an off-duty law enforcement officer working security at Soldier Field since 2024, was treated for injuries including substantial bruising and damage to her ribs and arms. Multiple reporters, including ESPN staff, witnessed the moments leading up to the altercation.
Wilson’s account differs sharply from the security firm’s version. In a statement to ESPN, he said he and his wife were assaulted by security as they tried to exit alongside media personnel, and that a guard struck his wife before he could identify himself as a former Bears player.
“No one, whether a former player, a season ticket holder, or a first-time visitor, should ever be subjected to this kind of treatment at a public venue,” Wilson said. “A misunderstanding about access to an area should never escalate to physical violence, least of all against a woman who posed no threat to anyone.” He added that his bond with the Bears and Chicago “remains as strong as ever” and said the incident “reflects the conduct of specific individuals working for a private contractor.”
What It Means
The conflicting accounts leave unanswered the central question of who escalated the encounter. Monterrey Security says Wilson forced entry onto a restricted elevator and attacked an officer; Wilson says he and his wife were assaulted and that the physical response came before any identification could take place. Both sides agree the confrontation left the officer injured.
Wilson called on the Chicago Park District and Monterrey Security to preserve surveillance and body camera footage and to conduct a full investigation. Monterrey Security has not named Wilson or the officers involved, citing company policy.
What’s Next
The Chicago Park District and Monterrey Security have not announced an investigation or released any footage. No charges or legal action had been reported as of publication.
