White Sox 2-0 in ALDS: the formula behind the stunning run

The White Sox lead the Guardians 2-0 in the ALDS and sit one win from the ALCS, a position almost nobody expected after three straight 100-loss seasons.

The White Sox lead the Guardians 2-0 in the ALDS and sit one win from the ALCS, a position almost nobody expected after three straight 100-loss seasons. Chicago’s 4-3 win in Game 2 on Monday, following a 3-0 shutout in Game 1, is not a fluke. It is the product of a specific formula: a shutdown bullpen, clutch two-out hitting and just enough starting pitching to get to the relievers who have carried this run. The question now is whether that formula holds for one more game.

A Bullpen That Has Been The Backbone

Sean Burke’s Game 2 outing was the clearest evidence of how Chicago has survived the ALDS. Burke threw 5⅓ innings of relief, allowed just one hit, struck out six and retired 13 straight batters at one stretch while firing 53 of his 83 pitches for strikes. That kind of length from a reliever has let the White Sox bridge games without overexposing a shaky rotation. Grant Taylor closed it out with his second consecutive save, escaping a shaky eighth inning after Chase DeLauter and Jo Adell strung together a single and RBI triple that pulled Cleveland within one.

Timely Hitting From Unlikely Places

In Game 1, his 444-foot home run to deep right field scored Miguel Vargas in a 3-0 win built around six total hits. In Game 2, Murakami’s fourth-inning single drove in Kyle Teel, who had delivered Chicago’s first hit of the night. The go-ahead blow came later, when Braden Montgomery ripped a two-run double down the right-field line and Chase Meidroth followed with an RBI single, turning a game Cleveland led 2-0 after the first inning into a White Sox win.

White Sox Survival Against Cleveland’s Best Efforts

Guardians starter Gavin Williams struck out 11 and looked every bit the ace Cleveland needed, and Steven Kwan and José Ramírez still found a way to score in the first inning, with Ramírez coming around on an errant throw. Cleveland even mounted a late rally in the eighth before Taylor shut the door. The White Sox have now won both games despite not controlling every inning, a sign their formula depends on weathering damage rather than avoiding it entirely.

History Working Against The Favorite

The Guardians entered this ALDS as the favorite, according to FOX Sports, and had split the regular-season series with Chicago 7-6 in Cleveland’s favor. Guardians manager’s club has reached the postseason in three of the last four years and carries more recent pedigree, including a 2016 World Series trip that ended in a seven-game loss to the Cubs. None of that has mattered through two games, and Cleveland now needs three straight wins just to force a return trip home.

The Fair Counterpoint: Thin Margins

For all the momentum, Chicago’s margin has been razor thin. The White Sox won Game 2 by one run after managing only six hits total in Game 1 and needing a late burst to overcome a 2-0 deficit in Game 2. Cleveland’s eighth-inning rally, built on a DeLauter single and an Adell triple, showed how quickly a one-run cushion can evaporate against this lineup. If Burke or Taylor are needed again on short rest, or if the White Sox again fall behind early, the formula that has worked twice could be tested in a way it has not yet faced.

What To Watch Next

Game 3 is scheduled for Wednesday at the White Sox’s home stadium, where Chicago can close out the series and reach the ALCS for the first time since 2005, the year the franchise last won the World Series. That drought, paired with the first playoff series win since 2005 over the Astros in the wild-card round, has made this October run one of the sport’s more unlikely postseason stories. Whether the bullpen depth and timely hitting hold up one more time will determine if the White Sox ALDS Murakami-led turnaround reaches Chicago’s first ALCS in more than two decades.
