Tour de France Stage 2: Del Torro Wins, Vingegaard Stays in Yellow
The Tour de France Stage 2 was an outstanding show. Mexican youngster Isaac Del Toro, just 22, won the stage as teammate Tadaj Pogačar urged him to do. Jonas Vingegaard, who last won in 2024, remained in the leader’s yellow jersey, the Maillot jaune, by 6 seconds. The Del Toro win was despite a mechanical issue that forced him to stop at one point in the race.
With a first- and second-place finish in the second stage of the 2026 Tour, the UAE Team Emirates team seized the momentum in its titanic struggle with Team Visma, the team of Jonas Vingegaard. With the stage victory, Del Toro became the first Mexican to win a stage in the famed race. What do you think will happen in the third stage?
Tour De France Stage 2 July 5

The second stage of the 2026 Tour de France was highly entertaining. Youngster Isaac Del Toro sprinted to victory at the urging of his UAE Emirates teammate Tadej Pogačar. Pogačar is the best bicycle racer in the world. By winning the stage, Del Toro became the first Mexican to win a stage of the race.
How Stage 2 of the 2026 Tour de France Played Out
The second stage of the 2026 Tour de France was very entertaining. 22-year-old Isaac Del Toro won the race by half a bicycle length as his teammate encouraged him to win the stage. Remco Evanpoel and Jonas Vingegaard finished in the same time. However, due to time bonuses for the top three in the stage, the lead of Vindegaard was halved to just 6 seconds. The next group of finishers was just four seconds behind. That group included the French youngster Seixas.
It will be interesting to see if Vindegaard can keep his lead against the surging teammates from UAE Emirates. His overall lead, which he has taken early in the race (that is a long time to defend the yellow jersey). His lead was halved, and it now seems doubtful he can defend the jersey. However, he says he feels good, and we have seen the yellow jersey in the past do some wonderful things.
The Battle
The main battle of the 2026 Tour de France is the same as it has been in recent years, with Pojochar facing off against Vingegaard. Pogochar is the heavy favorite, but Vindegaard is currently in the leader’s yellow jersey and says he feels good. So, we will see if he can unseat the defending champion.
Add to the drama the up-and-coming Del Toro, who won this stage of the tour, and 19-year-old Frechman, Paul Seixas, and you have an intriguing battle. Plus, there is time trialing specialist Remco Evenepoel. He, like De Gualle’s Brazil, is full of potential, and probably always will be.
Hometown Hero
The French have long wanted a Frenchman to do well in the Tour de France. It was the case that they usually had one, but it has been several years since they have had a hometown hero to cheer. However, the young Seixas gives them hope. Many think he could contend this year.
The French have more young riders coming. Roman Gregoire is one such youngster; he is one spot ahead of Seixas in the General Classification of the 2026 Tour de France. Lenny Martinez is another. He is 23 years old and is one spot ahead of Gregoire in the General Classification.
Conclusion
Through the first two stages of the 2026 Tour de France, there have been plenty of fireworks. The weather in Spain, where the Tour started in Barcelona, has been very hot. Stage three on Monday should be another highly entertaining stage. It is an early mountain stage, as the riders venture into the Pyrenees Mountains north of Barcelona. It is a stage from Granollers to Les Angles as the riders enter France.
