The Pursuit of the College Football Playoff

Georgia, Texas, and Ohio State have looked like the best teams in the country so far. Miami, Ole Miss, and Tennessee have impressed the most outside of the top three. Alabama looked great in week one, then really struggled to find offensive rhythm against South Florida on Saturday.

Notre Dame and Michigan fell on hard times this past week. The Irish, who were favored by over four touchdowns, got upset by Northern Illinois. The Huskies made a go ahead field goal with 36 seconds on the clock to win in South Bend. Michigan got manhandled at home by Texas, who is gearing up for an upcoming matchup against Georgia in mid-October.

Last season was the final season of the four team playoff system. Now, we move into the twelve team era, but does that really mean more teams have a legitimate shot at the natty? Going back to last season, it could be argued Georgia was the only team that got left out who could have won the national championship.

With twelve spots in the CFP up for grabs now, how many teams have the ability to go all the way? The new format guarantees the Power Four conferences will secure the top four seeds. It also promises a spot to the highest ranked Group of Five team. So teams like Boise State, Memphis, and others will have the ability to at least play for a chance.
