The Islanders lost to Carolina as they await reinforcements. Mat Barzal, Ryan Pulock, and Matias Meccelli all returned to practice yesterday. The injured players were wearing red non-contact jerseys. The Islanders have also acquired an experienced defenseman in Ben Hutton on a professional tryout contract. That contract allows the team to evaluate Hutton for 10 days before deciding whether to sign him.

The most interesting news for the Islanders is that the team might be able to acquire star Nikita Kucherov after the season. The star rocked the National Hockey League by saying he would not re-sign with the Lightning after this season. He demanded a trade. Islanders’ General Manager Mattieau Darsche was with the Lightning before coming to the Islanders. He knows Kucherov. The Islanders have never signed a big-ticket free agent. Kucherov would be a major boost to the team. Do you think the Islanders have a shot at signing Kucherov?

The Islanders lost 4-0 to Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers on October 31. Uncharacteristically, Carolina, the defending Stanley Cup champions, lost their last game 4-1 to the Nashville Pedators. Here is how this game played out, as the Islanders lost to Carolina.

In the first period, Logan Stankoven scored for the Hurricanes just 57 seconds into the game. They took a 1-0 lead. They quickly extended that lead to 2-0 when Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored for Carolina. The Islanders not playing since Halloween is showing early. There is some rust for the team. Since the score was 2-0 early, it looked like the Islanders would lose to Carolina. Those were the first two shots of the game against Semyon Varlamov. The Islanders played better at the end of the first period, but it ended with Carolina having a 2-0 lead.

In the second period, the Islanders outscored the Hurricanes 3 to 1. Nevertheless, the Islanders lost to Carolina in this game. Mitchell Chaffe scored for the Islanders to bring them to within 2-1. Then Brayden Schenn tied the game at 2. Andrei Svechnikov scored for the Hurricanes to retake the lead 3-2. The game was then tied at 3 by Victor Ecklind. That was his fourth goal of the season.

In the third period, the Islanders killed a penalty to start the period. They were hoping not to lose to Carolina, but they were very good. It was clear they were the more skilled team in this matchup. William Carrier scored his first goal of the season for Carolina. The score was 4-3. Then, Jalen Chatfield scored for Carolina, making the score 5-3. The final score of this game. The Islanders lost to Carolina.

The Fisherman is Back!

The Islanders wore white and hometown throwback jerseys. The fisherman was the crest on the chest. This harkened back to some very bad teams in 1995 and 1996. It was a little surprising that the fans did not chant, “we want fishstcks,” and throw them on the ice. Fans thought they were done with those jerseys. The defending Stanley Cup champions took the air out of the crowd early.

Brandon Bussi

Brandon Bussi was the goaltender for the Carolina Hurricanes. He was an unlikely hero, leading the team to a championship last season. He also came home for this game, as he is from Long Island. He made several great saves tonight, and in the first period, he saved a shot from Anthony Duclair on a breakaway. Later in the first period, he stopped Emil Heineman on another breakaway.

This Game and the Next

The Islanders lost to Carolina in this game. They were outclassed by the defending Stanley Cup champions, and this game showed how far they need to come. The player of this game was Brandon Bussi, the goaltender for the Carolina Hurricanes. He made 30 saves, including several breakaways, and did not allow many second chances to the Islanders, even on good scoring chances. He did allow three goals in the second period, but he continued to make big saves, including a breakaway near the end of the period.

The Islanders host the Devils on Saturday. This is the last game of the homestand for the Islanders. It was a three-game home stand. The hope was that the Islanders would not lose to Carolina in this game and then head to the West Coast next week.

Conclusion: Reinforcements Coming as the Islanders Head West

The Islanders lost to Carolina in this game. However, the Islanders signed defenseman Ben Hutton today. He might be in the lineup in the game on Sunday. It will be interesting to see if the injured players who returned to practice today, Mat Barzal, Ryan Pulock, and Matias Meccelli, are ready. The Islanders repeatedly have a talent gap, so getting these players back without more players getting hurt will be the challenge for the team.
