The Islanders lose to the Devils in this game, as this was the second consecutive game that they played a good team. It was the Carolina Hurricanes, the defending Stanley Cup champions, in the last game. It was military appreciation night at UBS Arena, as the team prepared to go on a West Coast swing that will keep them away from home until a home game on November 17.

The Islanders lucked out in this game with new Devils goaltender Connor Hellebuyck getting a rest on the bench. Instead, they faced Jake Allen, who now finds himself as the backup goaltender on the team that has acquired a clear number one between the pipes. The Islanders still await the return of their injured players. Do you think they will travel to the West Coast with the team?

The Islanders lost their last game at home to the defending Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes. In that game, they were outplayed in the first ten minutes and last ten minutes, but played well in the middle. The Devils are red hot. They have won three games in a row and seven of their last eight. It seems acquiring Hellenbyck has sparked them. Here is how this game played out.

In the first period, Anthony Duclair scored to give the Islanders a 1-0 lead. He got a good bounce, and the lead lasted just 17 seconds. Evan Rodrigues scored for the Devils; he was barely onside. That goal tied the game at one and quickly killed whatever momentum the Islanders had. Then, Matthew Schaefer scored for the Islanders. That made the score 2-1, as the youngster is a very good hockey player. That was his 28th career goal, and he is already in 16th place in team history in defenseman scoring.

In the second period, the game was quickly tied at two, as Declan Chisholm got a good bounce off the boards behind the net. The Islanders went up 3-2 just 26 seconds later when Simon Holstrom scored. Bo Horvat broke his stick right before Holstrom scored, and the flying stick blade may have distracted Devils goaltender Jake Allen. To this point, with 11:31 remaining in the second period, there were no penalties called. Then, Victor Ecklund scored for the Islanders, making the score 4-2. The Islanders needed to make the two-goal lead stand.

In the third period, Luke Evangelista scored for the Devils. Ilya Sorokin made several saves before the shot went in. Then, Dougie Hamilton scored on the power play for the Devils. That one tied the game at four.

Then, Jack Hughes scored in overtime, and the Islanders lost to the Devils 5-4.

Making The Trip

The Islanders have a big trip to the West Coast upcoming. They play in San Jose on Monday night. A key question for the beleaguered team is whether Mat Barzal, Ryan Pulock, and Mattias Meccelli will make the trip out west. They need to get players back, so fans hope so. Head coach Pete DeBoer was not willing to say whether these players would make the road trip. The plane leaves in the morning on Nov. 8.

This Game and the Next

The Islanders lose to the Devils. The final score was 5-4. The player of this game was Ilya Sorokin, who made several great saves tonight, and he faced a lot of shots. The Islanders take a plane to the West Coast after this game and play against the San Jose Sharks. The Devils play in Toronto Sunday Night, which is tomorrow.

Conclusion: Does it Get Easier?

The Islanders head to the West Coast tomorrow, Nov. 8. The first game they play is in San Jose. The Sharks, who were thought to be good, have disappointed this season. They are -20 overall, and their defense has struggled mightily. This game is probably easier. Then, they play the Kings. It is a game already being advertised on ESPN as a battle between Matthew Schaefer and the Kings’ breadwinner, Artemi Panarin. This one left a bad taste in the mouths of the Islanders. The Islanders lost to the Devils.
