No. 8 Texas Tech brings an unbeaten record to Nippert Stadium on Saturday for the Texas Tech vs Cincinnati Homecoming matchup, a game marking the Bearcats’ 100th Homecoming celebration. The Red Raiders are 6-0 and making their first-ever trip to Cincinnati, while the Bearcats enter at 4-2 and looking to stop a two-game losing streak that includes road losses at Arizona and West Virginia.

The biggest question facing Cincinnati is whether its offense can keep pace with a Texas Tech team that just hung 502 yards of total offense on Arizona State. The biggest question for the Red Raiders is whether their defense, which ranks fourth nationally against the run, can slow a Bearcats rushing attack that ranks 11th in the country.

Texas Tech Vs Cincinnati Game Information

  • Venue: Nippert Stadium, Cincinnati, Ohio

Can Cincinnati’s Run Game Offset Its Passing Numbers?

Cincinnati ranks No. 11 nationally in rushing at 231.2 yards per game, led by Cole Tabb’s 448 yards and eight touchdowns on 49 carries. Quarterback JC French IV has completed 108 of 153 passes for 1,338 yards and nine touchdowns, with JV Gibson hauling in 25 catches for 342 yards and four scores as the top target.

Texas Tech’s rush defense allows just 82 yards per game, a number that will test whether Tabb and the Bearcats can establish the ground game that has carried their offense through six games. Cincinnati’s passing attack ranks 73rd nationally at 228.9 yards per game, nearly identical to Texas Tech’s 74th-ranked mark of 226.3 yards per game, making this a matchup of two offenses built more around balance than big-play passing.

Is Texas Tech’s Offense Finally Hitting Its Stride?

Texas Tech quarterback Will Hammond has thrown for 1,334 yards and six touchdowns with five interceptions this season, and his performance against Arizona State marked a turning point, according to On3. The Red Raiders posted 404 yards of total offense in the first half alone against the Sun Devils, with 10 plays covering 20 or more yards, after an offense that had struggled with slow starts earlier in the year.

Running back J’Koby Williams, Texas Tech’s leading rusher with 538 yards and five touchdowns on the season, ran for 165 yards and two scores in that game. Left tackle Howard Sampson has taken on a leadership role up front, working alongside center Sheridan Wilson to pave the way for an offense that held Arizona State to just 35 yards rushing on defense while piling up yardage of its own.

Who Are The Expected Starters At Quarterback?

Hammond is expected to start for Texas Tech, with Thomas Castellanos, a transfer from Florida State, listed as the backup option. Hammond is reportedly trusting his surgically repaired knee more each week and has begun using his legs more as a runner, according to On3.

Cincinnati’s starter is expected to be JC French IV, who has thrown nine touchdown passes without the interception numbers that have affected Hammond’s season. French takes over the full-time role for a Bearcats team whose previous starter, Brendan Sorsby, threw for 426 yards and four touchdowns against Texas Tech in 2024 before later committing to the Red Raiders in January and being ruled ineligible over impermissible gambling.

By The Numbers

  • Points per game: Texas Tech 37.8, Cincinnati 35.2
  • Rushing yards per game: Cincinnati 231.2, Texas Tech 192.5
  • Passing yards per game: Texas Tech 229.8, Cincinnati 228.8
  • Third-down conversion rate: Cincinnati 49.35%, Texas Tech 42.25%
  • Total takeaways: Texas Tech 10, Cincinnati 4
  • Total giveaways: Texas Tech 9, Cincinnati 2
  • Turnover differential: Cincinnati +2, Texas Tech +1
  • Sacks recorded (defense): Texas Tech 17, Cincinnati 14

Key Matchup: Texas Tech’s Offensive Line Against Cincinnati’s Front

Cincinnati coach Scott Satterfield pointed directly to the trenches as the deciding factor. “The offensive line has to have a great week. This is the best defensive line we’ve played,” Satterfield said.

Texas Tech’s offensive line, led by Sampson and Wilson, faces a Bearcats defensive front that mirrors looks the Red Raiders see regularly in practice, running a three-down scheme with zone coverage. How that group handles Cincinnati’s pressure will shape whether Hammond gets the clean pockets that produced his best outing of the season last week, and whether Williams finds the same running lanes that netted 165 yards against Arizona State.

Players To Watch

J’Koby Williams, Texas Tech Running Back

Williams leads Texas Tech with 538 yards and five touchdowns on 74 carries and is coming off a 165-yard, two-touchdown performance against Arizona State. Teammates have credited his ability to make defenders miss in space and break through initial contact.

Kenny Johnson, Texas Tech Wide Receiver

Johnson, a transfer from Pitt, leads the Red Raiders with 24 catches for 418 yards. He and receivers Micah Hudson and Malcolm Simmons drew notice for their perimeter blocking in the Arizona State win, a factor that helped open running room for Williams.

Cole Tabb, Cincinnati Running Back

Tabb has rushed for 448 yards and eight touchdowns on just 49 carries this season, giving Cincinnati one of the most efficient ground games in the country as it tries to end its two-game skid.

What To Watch

Cincinnati faces three straight ranked opponents, hosting No. 8 Texas Tech and No. 10 Utah on back-to-back weekends before traveling to face No. 14 Houston on Nov. 7. The Bearcats have not won a game in November over the past two seasons, adding weight to Saturday’s result as they try to build momentum into that stretch.

Texas Tech leads the all-time series 1-0-1, with the first meeting ending in a 10-10 tie in Lubbock and the most recent matchup a 44-41 Red Raiders win in 2024. Cincinnati has won its last two ‘Nipp at Noon’ daytime games, against Iowa State and UCF last season, a trend the Bearcats hope to extend in their 100th Homecoming contest.
