Florida Atlantic outlook
Florida Atlantic has won three straight, most recently a 45-17 rout of Louisiana-Monroe, according to CBS Sports. Quarterback Caden Veltkamp threw for 313 yards and two touchdowns, and Ethan Ervin ran for 139 yards and a score. The Owls piled up 577 yards, including 245 on the ground.
Dominique Henry caught nine passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns in that game. The Owls scored 28 points in the second quarter to turn a 7-7 tie into a 35-17 halftime lead.
The three wins followed a 66-21 loss at Florida in the season opener on Sept. 5. FAU is led by second-year coach Zach Kittley.
Texas Southern outlook
Texas Southern opened with a 42-30 win over North Carolina Central, then lost three in a row: 52-14 at Prairie View A&M, 51-10 at UTEP and 43-40 in overtime at Alcorn State on Sept. 26. The Tigers are 0-2 in the SWAC and have allowed more than 50 points in two of those losses.
Cris Dishman is in his third season as head coach. The overtime loss at Alcorn State showed the offense can score, but the defense has struggled to get stops.
Key matchup
FAU’s passing game against Texas Southern’s pass defense could decide the game. Veltkamp and an air-raid offense will test a Tigers secondary that has given up big plays against FBS and SWAC opponents alike. If Texas Southern cannot slow the Owls early, the game could get away from it quickly.
