Teruaki Sato has entered MLB‘s posting system, opening a 45-day window for major league clubs to negotiate with the Hanshin Tigers infielder. The window closes Dec. 16 with any agreement needing to be finalized by 5 p.m. EST that day under MLB’s rules for Japanese players.
Sato, 27, just finished a Central League Triple Crown season for Hanshin, hitting .306 with 39 home runs and 106 RBIs in 2026. He was also the Central League MVP in 2025, batting .277 with 40 homers and 102 RBIs. The left-handed-hitting infielder, who has played mostly third base with occasional outfield work, also appeared for Japan in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, going 3 for 10 with two RBIs.
The Terms Of The Posting
Sato was officially posted Monday alongside fellow NPB players Kaima Taira and Hiromi Itoh. Any MLB club that signs him will owe Hanshin a posting fee under the standard formula: 20% of the first $25 million of a contract’s guaranteed money, 17.5% of the next $25 million, and 15% of anything beyond $50 million. The Tigers would also collect a 15% supplemental fee on any bonuses or options Sato later earns.
No contract figures have been reported, and the fact sheet does not include specific salary or term expectations for Sato. The posting fee structure only applies once a deal is signed, which must happen before the Dec. 16 deadline or Sato returns to NPB for at least this signing cycle.
What It Means For Interested Teams
Sato’s left-handed power has already drawn attention from analysts sizing up the open posting class. ESPN’s David Schoenfield called him “one of the most intriguing free agents” once he’s posted, citing his left-handed power given the lack of big hitters in free agency. Analysts have floated Sato as a potential fit for the New York Yankees, who need a hitter at the infield corners after Ryan McMahon hit .213 in 360 plate appearances last season.
Yankee Stadium’s short porches could suit a left-handed power hitter. No team has made an official statement about pursuing Sato.
Because Sato has played primarily third base with some outfield time in Japan, reports suggest he could end up moving to a different defensive spot at the major league level, though no team has outlined specific defensive plans for him.
Player Background
Sato’s back-to-back standout seasons for Hanshin give him one of the stronger recent NPB resumes among posted hitters. His 2026 Triple Crown, pairing the batting title with the home run and RBI crowns, followed an MVP campaign in 2025 that was itself built on 40 homers and 102 RBIs. His appearance for Japan in the World Baseball Classic went 3 for 10 with two RBIs.
What’s Next
The 45-day negotiating window runs through Dec. 16, 2026, when the posting period expires at 5 p.m. EST. Teams interested in Sato have until then to reach a deal, and any club that signs him will owe Hanshin the tiered posting fee outlined under the current MLB-NPB posting agreement. Kaima Taira and Hiromi Itoh were posted the same day and are working under the same deadline.
