Tennessee dominated No. 6 Kentucky 34-6 at Neyland Stadium, racking up 240 rushing yards and forcing three turnovers to pull away in the fourth quarter.

Kentucky Wildcats vs Oklahoma Sooners

Tennessee ran past No. 6 Kentucky 34-6 on Saturday at Neyland Stadium, piling up 240 rushing yards and forcing three turnovers to blow open a close game in the fourth quarter. DeSean Bishop scored twice on the ground and finished with 109 yards on 25 carries as the Volunteers improved to 7-2.

The game was tight through three quarters, with Tennessee leading just 13-6 before the Vols scored three unanswered touchdowns in the final period. Kentucky quarterback Kenny Minchey threw for 224 yards and completed 26 of 34 passes, but he lost a fumble and threw an interception that stalled two Wildcats drives. Kentucky falls to 7-2.

Key Moments: How Tennessee Pulled Away

Tennessee struck first when Daune Morris broke off a 66-yard touchdown run with 56 seconds left in the first quarter, part of a night in which Morris averaged 17 yards per carry on just five attempts. Kentucky answered with field goals of 43 and 25 yards from Adam Zouagui, the second coming with nine seconds left in the half to cut the deficit to 6-10.

Cooper Ranvier added field goals of 48 and 39 yards for Tennessee, the second coming early in the third quarter to push the lead to 6-13. The game stayed a one-score contest until the fourth quarter, when Tennessee turned the one-score game into a rout. Backup quarterback Faizon Brandon connected with Mike Matthews on a 24-yard touchdown pass with 13:34 left, then Bishop scored on a pair of 5-yard runs at the 9:45 and 1:06 marks to close out the scoring.

Kentucky’s three turnovers proved costly against a Tennessee offense that converted field position into points. The Wildcats lost two fumbles, one each from Jovantae Barnes and Minchey, and Dejuan Lane picked off Minchey for Tennessee’s lone interception of the night.

Top Performers

Bishop led all rushers with 109 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries for Tennessee. Morris added 85 yards on just five carries, and George MacIntyre completed 9 of 14 passes for 125 yards before giving way to Brandon, who threw the game’s only passing touchdown on his single completion.

Linebacker Arion Carter paced the Tennessee defense with 13 tackles and two sacks. Braylon Staley led Tennessee’s receivers with four catches for 50 yards.

For Kentucky, Minchey’s 224 passing yards led all players in the game despite the turnovers. Willie Rodriguez caught six passes for 81 yards and Kenny Darby added seven receptions for 69 yards. CJ Baxter led Kentucky’s ground game with 54 yards on 11 carries. Ty Bryant topped the Wildcats defense with nine tackles.

What It Means

Tennessee out-rushed Kentucky 240-137 and controlled the clock, holding the ball for only 24:43 compared to Kentucky’s 35:17. The Volunteers converted their lone fourth-down try while Kentucky went 0-for-2, and the Wildcats’ three giveaways against zero for Tennessee decided a game that was within one score for three quarters.

The loss snaps a stretch of momentum for Kentucky, which had been building a case for a Top 25 bid with wins over ranked opponents earlier this season, including a comeback victory detailed in Total Apex’s recap of Kentucky’s win over LSU. The Wildcats had also beaten Vanderbilt behind their ground game, as covered in Total Apex’s recap of that game, but struggled to establish the run against Tennessee’s defense.

For Tennessee, the win keeps the Volunteers in the mix among ranked SEC teams following a season that has featured shifts atop the national polls, as tracked in Total Apex’s coverage of the AP Top 25.
