Tampa Bay Buccaneers Elite Wide Receiver Duo

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will play their home opener against the Washington Commanders on Sunday at Raymond James Stadium. In the offseason, the Bucs have been improving their run game, hiring offensive coordinator Liam Coan, drafting center Graham Barton, and running back Bucky Irving. On Sunday against the Commanders, the Bucs plan to utilize their new run-game schemes after going 2-1 in preseason. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were near the bottom of the barrel in the run game last season. Improving it is a good idea, but you can’t run every snap.

There has been a lot of talk about the wide-receiving rookies on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers squad. Third-round pick wide receiver Jaylen McMillan and undrafted Kameron Johnson made their presence known during training camp and preseason, working their way to the new season’s team roster. These latest additions to the team may benefit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but they still have the two top wide receiver weapons ready for their matchup against the Commanders.

Mike Evans

Unless you have been living under a rock, Mike Evans will be entering his 11th season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For ten straight seasons, the Buc’s veteran wide receiver has had over 1,000 yards receiving and looks to do the same this season. Last season, Mike Evans accumulated 1,255 yards on 79 receptions and tied with Miami Dolphins Tyreek Hill for most touchdowns at 13. Evans needs five more touchdowns to hit 100 career touchdowns.

On Sunday, Mike Evans will line up against the Commanders’ cornerback Benjamin St-Juste, who will look to limit Evans’s damage on the field. In the past four games against the Washington Commanders, Mike Evans has caught 468 yards in 20 receptions with four touchdowns. It will open up for other players if the Commanders focus too much on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers veteran.

Chris Godwin

Going into his eighth season, Chris Godwin will be back in his old position at the slot position. Godwin has the physicality to catch and run the ball. In 2021, Godwin suffered a knee injury, which required surgery to repair the torn ligaments. He has brought in over 1,000 yards in receiving in the past three seasons. After a good training camp, he looks to be a significant highlight for the team this season, according to offensive coordinator Liam Coen on the team’s website,

“I think it’s going to show up for him. I think he’s feeling better. You can see his balance is better. He doesn’t feel like he has to cut off one leg. He has better balance, he has better feel and I think his physical attributes and tools are going to take over and I expect him to have a good year.”

Coach Coen expects Chris Godwin to produce similar game outputs as Cooper Kupp did when he was with the Los Angeles Rams. Godwin can create extra yards after the catch, and playing in the slot position will give him more room to adjust to tight defenses. Godwin is the number two guy in receiving yards for the Bucs, but that may change with Coach Coen as offensive coordinator.

Final Thoughts

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will need the right play mix to succeed, not just for Sunday’s game but for the season, if they plan on grabbing their fourth straight divisional title. The Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield has expressed his expectations for the run game this season, but he, too, looks to make an impact for his team. We will all see how the season unfolds for the Bucs.
