The Philadelphia 76ers signed Tacko Fall to a two-way contract Saturday, a move first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania. The deal fills Philadelphia’s last open two-way slot and addresses a front-court shortage after Ariel Hukporti suffered a season-ending right Achilles injury on Oct. 5.
Fall, 30, is returning to the NBA for the first time since the 2021-22 season. The 7-foot-6 center spent recent years overseas, most recently with the Ningbo Rockets of the Chinese Basketball Association.
Terms Of The Two-Way Deal
As a two-way player, Fall is limited to a maximum of 50 games with the 76ers and will otherwise split time with the Delaware Blue Coats, Philadelphia’s G League affiliate.
The 76ers signed Fall to an Exhibit 9 contract on Sept. 9, but a left hip strain sidelined him through the preseason before the two-way conversion.
What It Means For Philadelphia’s Roster
The move gives the 76ers added size at a position weakened by Hukporti’s Achilles injury earlier this month. Philadelphia allowed 49.6 points in the paint per game last season, the seventh-worst mark among teams that reached the playoffs, a number that underscores why president of basketball operations Mike Gansey and head coach Nick Nurse moved to shore up the frontcourt.
Fall’s overseas production offers some indication of what he could bring if healthy. He averaged 2.1 blocks per game across his overseas career from 2022 to 2026, and in his most recent CBA season with Ningbo he posted 11.2 points and six rebounds in 17.2 minutes per game.
Fall’s Health Remains An Issue
The hip strain that sidelined Fall through the preseason has not fully cleared. He was limited to individual work during Sunday’s practice because of the left hip strain, according to CBS Sports, and he is in jeopardy of missing Philadelphia’s regular-season opener Tuesday against New York.
What’s Next
The 76ers open the regular season Tuesday against the Knicks. Fall is in jeopardy of missing the game because of his left hip strain.
