Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen said he will evaluate every position on the roster after his team’s 42-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday dropped Indianapolis to 2-6. Steichen made the comment when asked whether Daniel Jones would remain the team’s starting quarterback going forward, according to NFL.com.
Steichen Addresses Every Position After Blowout Loss
The Colts trailed throughout Sunday’s game and never found a rhythm against Jacksonville. Steichen did not mince words afterward.
“It wasn’t good enough, flat-out wasn’t good enough,” Steichen said. “We got outcoached, we got outplayed and we’ve got to freaking learn from our mistakes in a hurry. The effort and the energy has to be there every week. If not, you’re going to get beat like that.”
Steichen also turned the criticism on himself, telling the Indy Star, “Clearly, I’ve got to do a better job, plain and simple. It starts with me as the head coach. I’ve got to do a better job to get these guys ready to go. That wasn’t it today.”
Asked about his own job security, Steichen kept his answer brief. “I’m focused on getting better. That’s what I’m focused on right now,” he said.
What It Means For The Colts’ Lineup
Steichen’s pledge to evaluate every position comes directly on the heels of the quarterback question, and the on-field evidence from Sunday gives that question weight. Jones was benched in the fourth quarter and replaced by Anthony Richardson Sr. after throwing two interceptions, according to Bleacher Report.
Jones has completed under 60% of his passes this season and has thrown seven interceptions, per Sporting News. Across eight games, he has 1,542 yards passing, five touchdowns and nine interceptions. Steichen did not name a starter for the next game, leaving the quarterback decision as a projection rather than a confirmed move.
The ground game offered no answer either. Jonathan Taylor carried the ball eight times for 23 yards and lost a fumble, numbers that stand out given his usual workload and reported trade-block status.
Context: A Franchise Already In Transition
Steichen’s comments land in the middle of broader organizational upheaval. The Colts have already traded guard Quenton Nelson and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner and parted ways with general manager Chris Ballard this season.
Jacksonville ran for 183 yards as a team, exposing a Colts defense that has now been part of a stretch covering a 2-13 record since last season’s bye week. Steichen’s overall record as Colts head coach stands at 27-31.
What’s Next
Steichen gave no timeline for when position changes might be announced, and the organization has not confirmed any staff moves beyond Ballard’s departure. The next update on the quarterback situation and any lineup changes would come as the Colts prepare for their following game.
