St. John’s Basketball Making History Over 10-Game Winning Streak

St. John's

The St. John’s Red Storm are in the midst of a 10-game winning streak. It is not just that they are winning, they are doing so with no help from their offense. The Red Storm extended their winning streak to 10 games after knocking off No. 19, and two-time defending champion UConn Huskies on Friday. St. John’s secured the victory even after a scoring drought that lasted six minutes in the second half. It was the team’s second ranked victory of the week as they defeated No. 11 Marquette on Tuesday.

St. John’s joined 2015-16 North Carolina as the only DI teams this century to make less than 25.0% of their three-pointers during a 10-game win streak. The Red Storm are shooting a paltry 23.7% from three-point range over their winning streak. Their win over UConn catapulted Head Coach Rick Pitino’s squad to the No. 9 ranking in the AP Top 25. It is the highest ranking they have achieved since 2000. Will the team be able to keep up their winning ways?

St. John’s Season Summary

St. John’s has had a tremendous regular season. They are 21-3 and in first place in the Big East. Their winning streak began on January 4 against the Butler Bulldogs. The wins against Marquette and UConn were their only wins against top 25 teams on their 10-game winning streak.

Head Coach Rick Pitino has been one of the best coaches in the nation for decades. His first year in Queens went adequately, but he turned the team into a national power in his second year at the helm. The team is led by Guard RJ Luis Jr. He leads St. John’s with 17.6 points per game. While the team has struggled on offense this season, they are 27th in opposing points per game.

Final Thoughts

St. John’s looks to win its 11th consecutive game this evening when they visit the Villanova Wildcats. The Red Storm have another ranked matchup later this week when they host No. 24 Creighton. The Red Storm are well on their way to making the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2018-2019 season. If St. John’s could couple an improved offense with their strong defense, they are a team no one will want to face in March.
