Dominic Solanke headed in a stoppage-time equalizer to earn Tottenham Hotspur a 1-1 draw at Manchester United on Saturday, completing a comeback that started with Rodrigo Bentancur’s second-half red card. The Solanke equalizer with 10-man Spurs came in the second minute of second-half stoppage time at Old Trafford, denying United a much-needed home win.
Manchester United had led since the 73rd minute, when Bryan Mbeumo cut inside Jan Paul van Hecke on a pass from Matheus Cunha and drilled a low strike into the right corner in front of the Stretford End. Five minutes later, Tottenham’s numbers dropped to 10 when Bentancur was sent off for headbutting Luke Shaw after Shaw shoved him following a kicked pass.
The Main Development: Solanke’s Header Seals A Point
Sandro Tonali delivered a cross from the corner of the penalty box in the second minute of stoppage time, finding Solanke in the box. With Lisandro Martínez defending him, Solanke glanced the ball home with his head while falling, completing the equalizer with Tottenham still down to 10 men.
Solanke credited his teammates afterward. “It doesn’t feel like a win!” he said, according to Goal, while praising the resilience Tottenham showed after Bentancur’s dismissal left them a man short for the finish.
What It Means: A Man Advantage Wasted Again
The result marked the second straight home league match in which Manchester United failed to beat a 10-man opponent, after a similar outcome against Manchester City. United had gone four matches without a league win before Mbeumo’s goal briefly put them on course to end that run.
Instead, United’s tally stands at five points from five games, matching their joint worst start to a Premier League season. They sit with a 1-3-2 record after the draw.
Context: Frustration Boils Over On Both Sides
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick said he was stung by the hostile reaction from the home crowd, which booed at both halftime and the final whistle, according to Goal. The frustration followed a match in which United conceded a late lead for the second consecutive home fixture, after Martínez was also at fault for an own goal against Fulham in the previous outing. Martínez was again implicated defensively on the equalizer, unable to prevent Solanke’s header.
On the Tottenham side, manager Roberto De Zerbi took a different approach to the red card, kissing Bentancur in the dressing room afterward in what Goal described as a celebration of the fire the midfielder showed during a difficult afternoon.
Team Impact: Both Sides Still Searching For Form
Tottenham had not won a match heading into the fixture and needed five games to score their first goal of the season. The draw pushed their record to 0-3-3 and brought their point total to three for the campaign.
For Manchester United, the inability to hold a late lead against 10 men for a second straight home game raises questions about how the team closes out matches when ahead, a pattern now repeated in back-to-back fixtures at Old Trafford.
What’s Next
Both clubs will look to build on the draw in their upcoming Premier League fixtures as they try to move away from the bottom of the early-season form table. Neither side has recorded a win across their last several league outings heading into their next matches.
