Darnell Nurse scored at 1:03 of overtime to give the San Jose Sharks a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues on Thursday at Enterprise Center, San Jose’s third overtime victory in four games to start the season. Nurse buried a backdoor pass from Ivar Stenberg at the nearside left post for his first goal since San Jose acquired him from the Edmonton Oilers on July 1.

Tyler Toffoli tied the game in the second period and then set up the winning sequence, finishing with a goal and an assist. St. Louis got a short-handed goal from Dillon Dube in the third, his first in the NHL since Nov. 16, 2023, but the Blues could not hold the lead and dropped their third straight game.

Takeaways From Sharks’ Win Over Blues

Overtime magic continues for San Jose

Every win San Jose has recorded this season has come in overtime, and Thursday’s finish fit the pattern. Nurse’s goal came less than 90 seconds into the extra period, giving the Sharks a 3-1-0 record and sole possession of third place in the Pacific Division with six points.

Sharks rally without their captain

San Jose played a second straight game without captain Macklin Celebrini, who is sidelined with a lower-body injury. The Sharks had been blanked 5-0 by the Dallas Stars on Monday in Celebrini’s first game out, making Thursday’s comeback a notable response. Collin Graf’s third-period equalizer, set up when Sam Dickinson’s centering pass deflected off Blues defenseman Adam Jiricek into the slot, kept San Jose’s night alive before Nurse’s winner.

Blues can’t hold third-period lead

St. Louis took a 2-1 lead on Dube’s short-handed goal, in which he kept possession on a 2-on-1 rush and beat Alex Nedeljkovic high to the glove side. The Blues could not protect it, falling to 1-2-1 and extending their skid to three games after opening the season with a 4-0 win over Dallas.

Player Of The Game: Tyler Toffoli

Toffoli finished with a goal and an assist for San Jose. He tied the game 1-1 in the second period by burying his own rebound at the near post after a Sharks power play had just expired, then assisted on Graf’s tying goal in the third to set up Nurse’s overtime winner.

Sharks Vs. Blues By The Numbers

San Jose put 27 shots on goal to St. Louis’ 26 and out-hit the Blues 37-24. Nedeljkovic made 24 saves in his first start of the season, while Hofer stopped 24 of 27.

Neither team converted on the power play, with San Jose going 0-for-4 and St. Louis 0-for-2, though the Blues did score shorthanded. San Jose also held a edge in blocked shots, 14-12, while committing more giveaways, 21-16.

What’s Next

San Jose improved to 3-1-0 and sits third in the Pacific Division with six points, one behind Edmonton and Vegas. The Sharks lead the season series against St. Louis 1-0.

St. Louis fell to 1-2-1 and seventh in the Central Division, extending their losing streak to three games.
