The PWHL has announced the six franchise logos and names. After playing an entire season of professional hockey without logos or club names, the league finally has brands fans can get behind. The inaugural season of the PWHL hosted teams with only geographical names. Approaching year two of the league, the six teams are now formally introduced.
The American Teams
The six PWHL clubs are Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Minnesota, Ottawa, and New York. With some being critical of the league’s first season being nearly nameless, fans finally can nail down a certain congruence behind their teams. The victorious Minnesota team of last season has been named the Minnesota Frost. The Minnesota logo bears a purple and blue ‘F‘, which certainly makes a statement. The Boston Fleet is the official title of the professional Boston club. On their reintroduction Monday, the third overall team in the 2023-2024 season sported a dark green logo.
The New York team of the Professional Women’s Hockey League has been named the New York Sirens. The team logo displays a yellow and turquoise theme, they will take the ice in the new uniforms this season. The Vice President of Brand and Marketing, Bhatt-Shah, stated “We wanted to ensure that our fans who were with us since the league was born could continue to sport their season one gear with pride and feel that sense of connection with their home team. The primary colors from our inaugural season held powerful equity and we didn’t want to lose that.”
The Canadian Teams
Montreal has been titled “Victoire de Montreal”. The name resonates with the French population in Montreal and its neighboring provinces. The club’s logo unveils a fleur-de-lis and is colored in maroon and darker tones. The PWHL Senior Vice President of Business Operations commented on the design of the Montreal name claiming, “It was an intentional decision. We wanted to represent Montreal and Quebec as best we can, and that is through the French language.”
The “electric” atmosphere Ottawa’s fans brought to the rink last season played a large part in the naming and composition of the club’s design. Ottawa Charge will be the new identity of the PWHL team. The logo is a charging ‘C’. Possibly charging to the Walter Cup Championship this season. Last on the PWHL list is the Toronto Sceptres. In the blueprint of the new logo and brand name, the club wanted to highlight the city’s royal reputation. With a light blue, and golden scepter through a gold ‘S’, the team has definitely, and accurately represented.
PWHL’s New Identity
The Ottawa Charge, Victoire de Montreal, Toronto Sceptres, Boston Fleet, New York Sirens, and the Minnesota Frost are finally being crowned the six formal teams of the PWHL. Fans at last have a brand to rally behind. Success is highly expected because of the reintroduction of the Professional Women’s Hockey League teams. Fans are finally able to wear the colors, logos, and names of the teams. Each team placing serious contemplation on the design and execution of their brands is sure to resonate with many fans and players alike.
