Panthers lose both starting cornerbacks to injured reserve

The Carolina Panthers placed both starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson on injured reserve Wednesday, depleting a secondary that was already a defensive liability. Horn sustained a quad injury and Jackson a groin injury in Sunday’s 21-18 loss to the Cleveland Browns, the team announced Wednesday.

The Injuries and Timeline

Horn’s injury is the more serious. According to Ian Rapoport, the two-time Pro Bowler sustained a quad injury that could keep him sidelined for months. Jackson faces a minimum four-week absence, guaranteed to miss Weeks 4 through 8 due to the team’s Week 5 bye.

The dual loss compounds Carolina’s defensive struggles. The Panthers allowed 59 points to the Bears in Week 1 and enter Week 4 ranked 28th in yards per game allowed. They rank last in the league in rushing yards allowed at 5.7 per carry, a stat underscoring how much the secondary’s weakness cascades across the defense.

Replacement Options and the Diggs Question

Carolina has only three cornerbacks on the active roster. Chau Smith-Wade has recorded 11 starts across three seasons; Akayleb Evans has accumulated 129 defensive snaps in the same span. The team signed Robert Rochell to the practice squad and has cornerbacks Corey Thornton, DeVonta Smith and Zion Childress in reserve roles.

Trevon Diggs, the former Dallas Cowboys All-Pro, is a realistic option. Diggs currently sits on the Seattle Seahawks’ practice squad, making him eligible to sign with another team’s 53-man roster. However, Diggs has dealt with injuries in recent years that have diminished his production.

Other potential targets include Shaun Wade, a former Ohio State standout who has bounced around practice squads; Tre’Davious White, who played for Buffalo last year but has declined from his All-Pro peak; and Kader Kohou, currently on the Kansas City Chiefs’ practice squad. Kohou played under Panthers secondary coach Renaldo Hill in Miami in 2023, a connection that could accelerate familiarity.

Roster Context

Horn had five interceptions last season, matching his total from his first four years in the league. Jackson had four interceptions last year, one more than he had in his first six seasons combined. Together, they formed one of the NFL‘s better cornerback duos.

Injuries extend beyond the secondary. Guard Damien Lewis (elbow) and wide receiver Jalen Coker (quad) left Sunday’s game early. Linebacker Devin Lloyd (calf), safety Nick Scott (rib) and wide receiver Xavier Legette (knee) did not play at all.

What’s Next

Carolina (1-2) faces the Saints in Week 4. The cornerback room will require immediate attention to compete with division rivals also scrambling for early-season footing.
