Will Ospreay retained the AEW World Championship on Saturday night by winning the promotion’s first-ever Clockwork Carnage match at WrestleDream 2026, outlasting seven challengers in a scoring-based multi-man bout he brought to AEW from the United Kingdom independent scene.
The eight-man field included Ospreay, Samoa Joe, Speedball Mike Bailey, Adam Copeland, Konosuke Takeshita, Kazuchika Okada, Ricochet and Darby Allin, all vying for points earned through pinfalls and submissions rather than a traditional single fall. Ospreay’s win extended a title reign that was less than two months old heading into the match, according to Bleacher Report.
The Main Development
Ospreay opened his night by hitting a Styles Clash on Ricochet for his first point of the match. Darby Allin answered by landing a Coffin Drop on the champion to get on the board himself, then took the overall lead by pinning Adam Copeland following La Casita.
Ospreay pulled back even with Allin at two points apiece by beating him with Hidden Blade. Samoa Joe then forced Ospreay to tap to the Coquina Clutch, pushing Joe to two points as well.
With one minute left on the clock, Copeland, Allin, Joe and Ospreay were all tied at two points, while Okada and Ricochet sat at one apiece. Copeland appeared to have the match won after spearing Okada, but Ospreay broke up the pin attempt with a Hidden Blade of his own and pinned Copeland with seconds remaining to seal the win, according to Bleacher Report. A heated confrontation between Ospreay and Copeland followed the finish.
What The Clockwork Carnage Win Means
Ospreay’s retention keeps the AEW World Championship in his possession as he becomes the first man to win a Clockwork Carnage match on AEW programming. The match format originated in Pro-Wrestling: EVE, the U.K. promotion where Ospreay works behind the scenes, and he chose to import the format and defend his title against seven opponents at once rather than face a single challenger.
The postmatch exchange between Ospreay and Copeland suggests their rivalry is not finished, though the sources do not detail what comes next for either man.
Path To WrestleDream
Five qualifying matches on AEW Dynamite and Collision determined part of the Clockwork Carnage field ahead of WrestleDream. Darby Allin punched his ticket by beating CMLL World Heavyweight Champion Hechicero, with the TNT Champion looking to reclaim the AEW World Championship he lost back in May.
Ospreay also beat Kazuchika Okada at AEW Grand Slam France on Dynamite to retain his title in a bout that functioned as a de facto qualifier for the Clockwork Carnage field. Four days before WrestleDream, Ospreay teamed with National Champion Andrade El Idolo in a preview tag match against Clockwork Carnage participant Samoa Joe and Tommaso Ciampa during a three-hour Dynamite/Collision special in Cleveland, according to Sports Illustrated.
What’s Next
WrestleDream 2026 took place Saturday, Oct. 18. No further title matches or dates for Ospreay’s championship have been announced following his Clockwork Carnage victory.
