Oklahoma vs Florida Gators kicks off Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in a game that marks the first meeting between the two programs as SEC members. Florida enters at 5-3 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while Oklahoma sits at 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the SEC. The Sooners and Gators have crossed paths twice before in the postseason, most notably when Florida beat Oklahoma in the 2009 BCS Championship game, but Saturday’s meeting opens a new chapter now that both schools share a conference.
Florida is coming off a difficult 27-8 loss to Georgia in which turnovers and penalties derailed the offense. Oklahoma has lost three of its last four, including a 42-25 defeat to South Carolina in which quarterback John Mateer was sacked three times. Both teams need a result to steady their second-half push through SEC play.

Florida Gators Outlook
Florida’s offense averages 35.6 points and 425.3 total yards per game, numbers padded in part by a 52-28 rout of Ole Miss earlier this season. The Gators have been far less consistent since, losing to Missouri 45-17 and South Carolina 38-19 before beating Texas 27-24 and falling to Georgia 27-8 in their most recent outing.
Running back Jadan Baugh has carried the load with 801 yards and 13 touchdowns on 152 carries, and he is expected to play a major role again against an Oklahoma defense that has allowed 106.8 rushing yards per game of its own production to measure against. Quarterback Aaron Philo has thrown for 1,367 yards with nine touchdowns and five interceptions, but Florida coach Jon Sumrall has not settled on a definitive starter. “There will be one guy that starts and one guy that doesn’t out of the 2 guys you’re probably worried about,” Sumrall said, according to Sports Illustrated.
Florida’s defense was one of the few bright spots in the Georgia loss, holding the Bulldogs to 6 of 15 on third down. The unit has posted 23 sacks and a takeaway margin that helps explain Florida’s overall +5 turnover differential this season.
Oklahoma Sooners Outlook
Oklahoma has managed just 17 points per game over its last three games, a sharp drop from its season average of 22.0 points. The Sooners split their last four, beating Texas 27-24 and Mississippi State 23-15 while losing to Kentucky 21-13 and South Carolina 42-25.
Mateer has thrown for 1,835 yards with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions, completing 162 of 247 passes, but he has absorbed pressure at a higher rate than Philo. Oklahoma allows 2.6 sacks per game compared to Florida’s 1.6, and Mateer was sacked three times in the loss to South Carolina. Lloyd Avant leads the ground game with 347 yards on 79 carries, well behind Florida’s rushing production, and Isaiah Sategna III paces the receiving corps with 591 yards on 45 catches.
The Sooners also made a coaching change, letting go of offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, according to Yahoo Sports. Oklahoma’s turnover differential sits at -2 on the season, a factor that has compounded its offensive slide.
Key Matchup
Florida’s pass rush against Mateer stands out as the matchup likely to shape the outcome. The Gators have piled up 23 sacks this season and allow pressure at a far lower rate than Oklahoma does, a gap that could let Florida’s front dictate terms against a Sooners offense already averaging just 17 points over its last three games. Oklahoma’s offensive line must find a way to protect Mateer longer than it did against South Carolina, when three sacks helped derail the Sooners’ attack.
Players To Watch
John Mateer, QB, Oklahoma
Mateer has thrown for 1,835 yards and 13 touchdowns this season but has also thrown seven interceptions and taken regular pressure. How he handles Florida’s pass rush will go a long way toward determining whether Oklahoma’s offense can find consistency.
Jadan Baugh, RB, Florida
Baugh has rushed for 801 yards and 13 touchdowns on 152 carries, numbers that make him Florida’s most reliable offensive weapon. Sumrall is counting on him to anchor the ground game after last week’s offensive struggles against Georgia.
Tramell Jones Jr., Florida
Jones Jr. is expected to provide a spark for Florida’s offense as the Gators look to bounce back from a 27-8 loss to Georgia, according to Yahoo Sports.
What To Watch
Florida has four regular-season games remaining and a chance to finish 9-3 with a winning mark in SEC play, something the program has not done since 2020, according to Sports Illustrated. Sumrall has pushed accountability after the Georgia loss. “I talked about mine to the team…I said, ‘Hey, who made mistakes on Saturday, raise your hand.’ And I raised mine,” he said. He also acknowledged the staff’s role in the offense’s inconsistency, saying “Right now, man, we’re not making the quarterback’s job any easier.”
For Oklahoma, the game is a chance to stop a three-game stretch of offensive decline under a new play-calling arrangement following the departure of Ben Arbuckle. The Sooners’ season has already included one notable upset, and another loss in Gainesville would add to a difficult second half for Norman. Florida’s coach remains focused on the bigger picture regardless of Saturday’s result.
“I have championship expectations every day. We’re not there yet, and that’s frustrating as hell. But we’re going to get there…I’m very confident in that,” Sumrall said.
