Ohio State Wrestling had a successful start to its season, winning six titles at the Clarion Open. The meet was a good gauge for the No. 6 Buckeyes, who were looking not only to start their season but also to evaluate their talent. The team is tasked with knocking off the number-one wrestling monolith, Penn State. The Buckeyes are wrestling in these events in order to prepare for a difficult schedule in the Big Ten Conference.
The Ohio State Wrestling team got titles from Vinny Kilkeary, Maddox Shaw, Brandon Cannon, Ethan Stiles, Ryder Rogotzke, and Nick Feldman. Some of those wins, for example, were Ryder Rogotzke’s win at 197 pounds. This showed good depth, which will be necessary given that injuries happen and the team is tasked with dethroning the Nitatay Lions. Do you think they have a chance?
Ohio State Wrestling at Clarion Open

The Ohio State Wrestling team began its season on Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Clarion Open. The Buckeyes had a successful start to their season, winning six titles in their season debut. The Ohio State Wrestling team is ranked number six in the nation and is preparing to face a grueling Big Ten Conference schedule. They are looking to knock off the top-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions. Here is a look at how the various weight classes played out.
125
The Buckeyes did very well at the lightest weight class. Ohio State Wrestling took the top three spots at 125 pounds. Veteran Vinny Kilkeary won the championship over freshman Dom Munaretto. Another rookie, Antonio Mills, took third with a 5-1 record, winning five consecutive matches after an opening loss. This has historically been a weak weight class for the Buckeyes, but it does not look like the case this year.
141
At 141 pounds, Nic Bouzakis was fifth. This was a disappointing result for the returnee. Though at this weight class, red-shirt sophomore Brogdon Fielding won his semifinal match. Karson Brown was 2-2 in this weight class. Again, there is good depth here for the Buckeyes.
149
Red Shirt sophomore won the 149-pound weight class. He is just a second-year wrestler, so this result was very good. Dylan Chase was 3-2 in this weight class and finished fourth.
157 and 165
At 165 pounds, the Ohio State Wrestling team got another win as Brandon Cannon won all of his matches (4-0) on his way to a title. It was the same story for the Buckeyes at 165 pounds. There, Ethan Stiles was 4-0 and won the title. Patrick Downing went 0-2 for the Buckeyes at this weight class. He may have a hard time finding mat time. Landon Desselle had the same result, but T.J. Schierl was 2-2.
174 and 184
At these two weight classes, Ohio State wrestling had two second-place finishes. At 174 pounds, fifth-year senior Jaxon Sith was second. At 184 pounds, Carson Mize finished in second place for the Buckeyes. Both wrestlers were 2-1.
197
The Buckeyes finished 1-2 at this weight class. Ryder Rogotzke won the title, and the only wrestler Xander Myers lost to was Ryder Rogotzke.
Heaveyweight
Finally, at the heavyweight wrestling class, Nick Feldman is one of the best wrestlers in the country. He went 4-0 and won the title. Cliff Nicholson was 0-2, and he will also have a hard time finding the mat behind Feldman.
Conclusion: What is Next for the Buckeyes and Season Outlook
The Ohio State Wrestling team next wrestles in a dual meet at Columbia University on Nov. 8. The Buckeyes should easily win this dual as they continue to get ready for a tough conference schedule. The Big Ten Conference has several of the best wrestling teams in the nation. Therefore, expect stiff competition. The conference, of course, is headed by Penn State. They are the defending national champions and have compiled an unbelievable record, winning the last five and fifteen overall. They also have a bevvy of individual championships. They will be very good again this year.
