The Minnesota Vikings signed Odell Beckham Jr. to their practice squad, the team confirmed, just over a week after the New York Giants released the veteran receiver. The move reunites Beckham with head coach Kevin O’Connell, the Rams’ offensive coordinator in 2021 when Beckham caught 27 passes for 305 yards and five touchdowns over eight regular-season games.
Beckham, 33, appeared in three games for the Giants this season without recording a catch or a target, playing just 20 offensive snaps, according to the New York Post. New York released him on Sept. 29. Giants head coach John Harbaugh said of the split, “It wasn’t working for us,” according to CBS Sports.
The Terms Of The Odell Beckham Jr. Signing
No contract terms were disclosed. A practice squad deal does not guarantee Beckham a spot on Minnesota’s 53-man roster. He would need to be elevated or signed to the active roster to play in a game for the Vikings, who do not face the Giants during the regular season, per the New York Post.
Why Minnesota Made The Move
The Vikings are 4-0, one of three unbeaten teams in the league, but their passing attack has struggled statistically. Minnesota ranks last in the NFL in passing yards at 156.0 per game and 31st in total yards at 262.8 per game, while scoring 21.5 points per game, good for 18th, according to FOX Sports.
Those numbers reflect a receiving corps that has been without Justin Jefferson, the team’s top receiver, who has missed games with an ankle injury. Jordan Addison and Jauan Jennings have handled the top wide receiver snaps in Jefferson’s absence, with Tai Felton and Myles Price combining for six career catches as the depth options behind them, per the New York Post. Adding a receiver with Beckham’s pedigree gives O’Connell another body to evaluate while Jefferson works back to full health.
Beckham’s Career Background
Beckham entered the league as the No. 12 overall pick by the Giants in the 2014 NFL Draft out of LSU and made the Pro Bowl three straight years from 2014-16, earning second-team All-Pro honors in 2015 and 2016. For his regular-season career, he has caught 575 passes for 7,987 yards and 59 touchdowns.
His most productive recent stretch came with the Rams in 2021, when he caught 21 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns across three playoff games before tearing his ACL in Super Bowl LVI. That injury cost him the entire 2022 season. Since then, Beckham has bounced between stops, spending one-year stints with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023 and the Miami Dolphins in 2024, and he did not appear on an NFL roster in 2025 before returning to the Giants this year, according to FOX Sports. An elevation to Minnesota’s active roster would make the Vikings the sixth franchise of his career, joining the Giants, Browns, Rams, Ravens and Dolphins.
What’s Next
Beckham will need to be elevated from the practice squad or signed to Minnesota’s active roster before he can play in a game. The Vikings, 4-0, continue to monitor Jefferson’s ankle injury as they prepare for their Week 5 matchup against New Orleans on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
