Nico Hischier scored his 200th career NHL goal on Saturday, helping the New Jersey Devils beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-1. The milestone came in Hischier’s 613th game with New Jersey, the only franchise he has played for since entering the league.

Hischier finished the night with two goals and an assist, pacing a Devils offense that had struggled to find the net through the opening weeks of the season.

The Main Development

The 200th goal of Hischier’s career made him the fifth Swiss-born player to reach that total in NHL history. Only one of the four Swiss players ahead of him got there faster. Timo Meier needed just 569 games to hit 200 goals, meaning Hischier’s path took 44 more games than Meier’s but still ranks as the second-quickest among his countrymen.

Jake Allen backstopped the win in net, stopping 20 shots in his 500th career game for New Jersey. The pairing of milestones, Hischier’s 200th goal and Allen’s 500th game, gave Saturday’s win extra weight beyond the final score.

What It Means

New Jersey had scored just six goals through its first three games of the season entering Saturday, putting the Devils among the lowest-scoring teams in the league. The power play had been just as stuck, converting once in 14 chances before the Vancouver game.

Those numbers flipped against the Canucks. New Jersey went 3 for 4 with the man advantage, and Hischier’s three-point night was central to breaking the early-season scoring drought. A captain producing a milestone goal while also padding the power-play numbers is the kind of performance a team short on offense needs from its top player.

Context On The Milestone

Reaching 200 goals in 613 games works out to a rate of roughly one goal every three games across Hischier’s career. That kind of sustained scoring from a center who has spent his entire career with one organization reflects the type of two-way, high-usage role the Devils have built around him since he entered the league.

Being named among the five Swiss players to ever score 200 NHL goals places Hischier in rare company for a hockey nation that has produced relatively few high-volume scorers at the top level of North American professional hockey.

What’s Next

The Devils will look to build on Saturday’s offensive outburst as they continue their early-season schedule, with New Jersey aiming to shake the scoring struggles that defined its first three games. The team’s power play, dormant for much of the young season, showed signs of life against Vancouver that New Jersey will want to carry forward.
