New York Yankees Look To Avoid a Sweep

The New York Yankees must win tonight to avoid being swept.

After another disappointing offensive display and yet another loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series, the New York Yankees are now faced with the task of avoiding being swept in four games. Yankees fans who had high hopes for a 28th championship banner when the series began are now just hoping to avoid the utter humiliation of a 4-0 World Series sweep.

In the history of the storied franchise, the New York Yankees have only been swept in the World Series three times in 40 appearances. In 1922, the New York Giants beat the Yankees 4-0-1. The 1963 Los Angeles Dodgers with Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale defeated an aging Yankees team 4-0, and the up-and-coming Yankees of the 1970s lost to the “Big Red Machine Cincinnati Reds in 1976. The 2024 New York Yankees would like to avoid adding their name to the infamous list.

The New York Yankees Need Someone To Start Hitting

Once again in game three, the Yankees bats remained quiet. The only runs of the game came in the ninth inning off the bat of Alex Verdugo who homered and drove in Anthony Rizzo. It was a case of too little too late as the Yankees lost 4-2. Giancarlo Stanton and the bottom of the Yankees order accounted for all five Yankees hits. The top of the order, Gleyber Torres, Juan Soto, and Aaron Judge combined to go 0-of-9 with four walks. Judge did manage to strike out only once. Maybe that’s an improvement.

During the regular season, the New York Yankees were one of just three teams to score 800+ runs with 815. They were behind their World Series opponents (842) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (886). Against the Dodgers in three games the so-called “Bronx Bombers” have plated seven base runners in 28 innings. It’s a given that the postseason is a different animal than the regular season as teams send out their best pitchers, but the extremes in offensive production for the Yankees are beyond alarming. It’s become comical. You can just feel the anticipation of a swinging strikeout when Aaron Judge comes to the plate.

Once More Into the Breech Good Yankees

For game four, the New York Yankees will send Luis Gil to the mound to face the Dodgers while Dodger Manager Dave Roberts will likely deploy several pitchers in a bullpen game. If the Yankees can just manage to eke out a win against the Dodgers bullpen, ace Gerrit Cole would pitch game five in the Bronx on Wednesday. Should Yankees fans even dare to dream?

The laws of probability dictate that if something has happened once it can happen again. The New York Yankees were on the losing side of a 3-0 comeback to a team with Dave Roberts on it in the 2004 Boston Red Sox. Maybe they can turn the tables and come back against a team managed by Dave Roberts in the 2024 Los Angeles Dodgers. The prospects don’t look promising, but if it’s going to happen it has to start with game four.
