The NBA All-Star Reserves were announced on NBC’s Sunday Night Basketball pregame show, and it’s an interesting list of All-Stars for sure. The thing that stands out the most was that six first-time all-stars were selected, probably because of the new format of USA vs the World.

But it is a sign of progress in how the game is evolving. The first-time All-Stars were Jamal Murray, Jalen Johnson, Chet Holmgren, Deni Avdija, Jalen Duren, and Norman Powell. Also another huge headliner is Lebron James, making it for the 22nd straight season of his career in his 23rd season. The other reserves include Donovan Mitchell, Karl Anthony-Towns, Pascal Siakam, Scottie Barnes, Anthony Edwards, Kevin Durant, and Devin Booker.

Let’s dive a little more into the All-Star reserves and the format.

The NBA All-Star Announcement and Thoughts

NBC had its first inaugural presentation of its Sunday Night Basketball presentation, so it was the perfect time to announce the Reserves. The announcement featured Carmelo Anthony, Vince Carter, and Tracy McGrady sharing thoughts on the reserves, which is a great analysis team to discuss these selections by the NBA.

The six new all-stars are the right selections to complete the format, and they are all deserving of their play this season, especially Jamal Murray, who is getting his first selection in his ninth season. I figured Holmgren and Duren were getting selected because of how the Thunder and Pistons have played so far this season. Which leads into the next part, the format

The New All-Star Format

The New NBA All-Star Format is going to be two USA teams and a World Team. The first USA team will play the World, and the Winner advances to play the third team, and then the losing team will play team C in Game 3. The two teams with the best records will play in the last game. This should be an interesting concept to maybe get the game more competitive and fun throughout the duration of the Night on All-Star Sunday.

Social Media Reactions

Here are a few examples of social media reactions to the All-Star selections. You could say some of the reactions are definitely mixed at the moment to these selections, as you can see below.
